yes the heater cable went to the little vent door that looks like a coffe can lid. sorry im horrible at describing. :pale

hold on jeff on ur site that 86 model diagram my knobs are in completely different places i dont have that lower thing under neath the ignition all my knobs are to the right of the ignition switch.(except the heater one its on the left of it)

its set up like model 79!
here i made it look like mine.(no making fun of it)

The cable sets were options, the 86 could be had without the cables in which case there would be just the blower
and vent cable, the defrost would be hand opperated
under the dash and the temp (H) control would be a
in-line hand valve under the hood just like the model 79.

In 68 the B (blower) <as above> was twist on/off
and a pull for the pass side vent built into the
same knob; since is the
case (someone pipe up if not) the vent would be
deleted on the pass side.

As for your diogram (alter drawing) I got what
your saying. I think that your set up is not
from the factory (possable, but not likely)
and that it has been changed out after the fact
since most of the controls are out of the drivers
"easy" reach. This photo is out of the 67 manule.
From what your saying there is no vent cable control?

Some later trucks will also have a cable valve under
the hood instead of in the heater box. These are mostly post 68 trucks (69-71). After the 69 dash
change much of how things worked change with it.
