wiper motor gasket

Post by MikeM »

Hi,

I have a small leak inside my cab coming through where the wiper motor attaches to the fire wall. How hard is it to remove the wiper motor from the truck and what is the best way to seal it to the fire wall? I bought the gasket, but it's just a piece of open cell foam that seems susceptible to absorbing water. Will silicon or equiv. work better or is there a rubber gasket instead. My truck is 1968 W200.

Thanks for your help.

Mine is a closed-cell polyethylene foam similar to what you see packaging electronics.

No way I'd use silicone. If you have to take it off, it won't give. Paint will never stick there again without extreme measures.

I suggest installing it with Hylomar polyurethane sealant (https://www.amazon.com/hylomar/s?k=hylomar). It doesn't harm paint, it cleans up enough to paint with lacquer thinner, it's oil proof, and it never sets. Good for fasteners exposed to fluids as well.

There are four bolts on studs that hold the motor in place. On my 68 I had to remove the wipers, cowl and linkage. You can then disconnect the wiring and four nuts. The motor should come right out. I used a cork gasket I made, hasn’t been in the rain yet but would think it should hold up ok. Good luck

A tool like this helps with pressing out pivots on linkage

Thanks for the replies. Does the complete wiper linkage/assy need to be removed in order to remove the wiper motor? I was thinking the linkage only had to be removed from the motor for it to come out.

There is a 7/16 nut that holds the linkages to the motor. You can remove the nut and pull the linkages off. The other end of the linkages will remain connected to the wipers. :Thumbsup
