timing mark 61 poly
ust picked up another 61 D300 with 19.5s and 9 foot box and dump! question is what doe sthe timing mark look like? only mark I can find is a drilled spot which I would think is a balancing drill mark not a timing mark. when I spin it over to rotor pointing at number one I don't see a mark. It running really rough like 6 cylinder and the old guy who owned was have old guy problems hence they sold me the truck because he was trying to drive it in when he shouldn't have been. I am suspecting he may have worked on it not in right state of mind. makes me think the dist is in wrong.

Believe it is in the side of the pulley. Hole or mark hard to see ,but there. This is a 318 from a '62 dart.

mine has a harmonic balancer. just not seeing any line. I sanded the whole thing down too. I will get in there with a better light and try again.

found the mark. very faint. painted it. timing chain is stretched so its not at zero when you spin rotor to point at 1. debating on whether to rebuild this engine or look for a better running one. problem is finding the 58 to 61 poly is tougher than finding 62 to 66. the bellhousing pattern is different and I think the crank sticks back farther. anyone got a rebuilt 61 poly lying around?

Just rebuild the original engine. That way, you will KNOW what you've got when you're done. Plus the experience of rebuilding an engine is always... FUN to me. Just My thoughts...

I will probably just rebuild it. it has a zillion miles it seems. was forest service for 11 years then weekend camper hauler and week long landscaping company truck for 17 years then farm truck till now. probably 250K easy. I know heads were off for bad exhaust valve at some point in its later, daily use life. for timing chain to be stretch as bad as this one has to be tons of miles

Kaegi can you post a picture of the mark you found on the pulley ? I have 1961 poly and need to locate the marking as well. Would be great to know what I need to look for.

sorry it took me so long. been travelling and really busy. got engine dropped in. took this just before install. the 0 and the line are faint to I highlighted with engine color

It will show up really easy with a timing light. I usually just use a soap stone to mark my damper... but that will eventually wear off and go away.

That picture is with a damper , not the early pulley type. There should be a line on the damper, hard to see sometimes. Great looking color!

Thanks, that color was on some 61s. Golden Lion is what Chrysler called it. discontinued by Chrysler a few years ago. got some out of Canada. I like it. the engine is original 1961 and has the balancer. maybe because its a 1 ton? its not a 318-3. solid lifters and block stamping verified. I didn't know that engine color went that far back on Olds... but my mom and dad had a '74 Cutlass that had that gold engine (that Olds 350 engine sounded great).
