Fuel tank relocaton

I saw a segment of one of those car resto shows. This one showed a '65 C-10 Chevy with a gas tank that was being replaced and relocated to between the rear frame rails. The cap was inside the left rear bed stake hole! It actually mounts flush with the surface of the bed lip, with the filler running down that stake hole tube, making a 90* turn, and entering the tank from the rear. The tank was a '69 Blazer/Suburban unit, available new. Very creative, with absolutely NO evidence of where the tank filler would be located, just looking at the truck.

Very neat and clean. Leaving, of course, plenty of room behind the seat for amps and speakers. Might do something like this to the lowered truck.

yeah I saw that episode also and the show was called Fantom works they are located in Norfolk Virginia. I wonder where they got the pop up filler cap from as it did not seem like something they made in the shop. it was a nice clean set up. I too am looking to relocate my fuel tank because I'm tired of trying to get the original filler cap to stop leaking and it would be nice to get the fuel smell out of the cab. so definitely looking at this option and thought I saw on here somewhere that folks were using the fuel tank from a Ram Charger.

I've seen people use marine deck fill caps for this. They make ones that pop up then screw off.

lots of places sell pop caps for people that make their own motorcycle tanks, as well

although, boats and motorcycles, its kind of a toss up on which has the more over-priced parts

I am starting to get interested in moving the tank finally. I am sick of smelling fuel. I am leaning toward a couple of options. I need to see how a 78 style poly truck tank would fit and someone here recently used a Challenger tank. Those fuel senders don't work well though so not too excited for that option.... I think Surfnuke used a ford tank..

Both Surfnuke and I used a 33 gallon Bronco tank. The sending unit fits it fine, it is only off by a 1/8 of a tank. Jim

Can't remember if the ford uses the same ohms

I put in a Ramcharger tank, '70 D100 the tank hung down really far you could see half the tank below the bumper. I really did not like the look and took it back out. Rod

I just completed a fuel tank relocation on mine. I had an old fuel tank from a 65 mustang I wasn't using and installed it between the rear frame rails. It took a bit of fabing the rear frame brace and adding another cradle brace, but it came out great, and I was able to use the same sending unit as the mustang, and the dodge wiring plug in was the same and reached!

New guy here. The fuel tank on my truck was pulled before I bought it because it was rotted out. I'm was looking to replace the tank and then I read this thread.

Am I to expect the scent of petrol on a daily basis? Is this just the "normal" smell of the Sweptline cabin? Tell me more.

I own over 30 swepts and have driven them daily since 78. With a leak free tank, fill pipe and cap, there are NEVER gas fumes in the cab. On the couple times there were, it was a leak somewhere that needing fixing. It is NOT normal.

Did you have to move any crossmembers to fit that in? How big is the tank (gals)?

I'm not sure if I'll have the fill going through the wood floor or flip down license plate. Which way are you going? and Do you see it possible to go either way?

Yes, I had to drill out the original swedges and relocated the brace further to the rear, and put in a new cross member to support the tank. I think this is a 16 gallon, but I'm not sure, it's an OG Ford Mustang tank I had laying around. I plan to use a pop top coming up through the bed, since the tank sits above the license plate.
