should i make the swap?

Post by prosparky475 »

OK I have a chance to pick up a 69 383. I have a 69 W200 with a 318 and the 435. Question is will it be possible to find a 727 that will work or would it be easier and cheaper to just find a bell housing for the 435?

I would think with your 69 truck you could go either way easily. :Thumbsup

Someone with a little more knowledge of those years for the W series will have to chime in. Possibly a D series club cab trans from a lifestyle (72/78)truck with a BB.

Those bell housings are easy to find compared to the hydraulic bell. You will also need the matching flywheel .

Here' a pic. of a BB 727 short tail.It came out of a 76' motorhome. They will fit in front of the T-case. Paid around $200 for it.

The 318 flywheel should work on the 383. Both require a neutral balance 143 tooth. Just have to get the big block mechanical bell. They go for about $200-250
I believe your existing clutch disc/pressure plate/linkage/etc should all work with the BB bell.

Bring me a manual shift column and you can rob the auto column and related bits out of my 69. I'm going to be swapping to a floor mounted swan neck shifter anyway. I'm just north of Memphis. I want the inside of the 69 to more closely match the inside of the 49, which came stock with a swan neck 3 speed shifter. Both getting bucket seats and small center consoles.
