Transmission help: rebuild vs buy used/new
Transmission help: rebuild vs buy used/new
guys,
would love your recommendations on working on my 68'D200 A727 transmission 3auto...
Looking at rebuilding mine vs buying used/new or buying one already rebuilt...
mine will not engage in any gear
nothing happens at all...
I have minimal experience with thes but anytime I've seen/heard trani issues, you usually feel jerk or something happens...
I am getting nothing at all...
Thanks,

Sir
To a Parts Book any 1968 A-727 Re-built Kit is all the same be it for a Slant six or a
Imperial Division Car with about three ton's of rolling weight.
****
Even though Dodge Truck's have The Load-Flite Spec'd 727 vs what most cars have all the parts in
every Re-build Kit are the same.
****
Check the price of your Re-Built Kit from a local NAPA and while doing this find a local to you
MoPar Club because most of them have a person that Re-builds 904's and 727's for a low cost.

I'd almost bet your torque convertor is bad. Either way you have to pull the whole thing.

Are you able to remove it yourself? That could save you some $$dlynes wrote:what kind of prices should I expect to pay?

as suggested b4, great way to cut down on the expense is remove/install transmission myself
but if I do that, will someone still warranty the trani if they didnt install it?

Re: Transmission help: rebuild vs buy used/new
Out here in No. California, about $1500-$2000 to install your tranny depending what you need, gear section may be good still. Shop time is biggest expense, not that hard to do it yourself, a Chilton manual would give good enough info even. Good chance your pump bit the dust or valve body is bad, you usually notice a pop(weird noise when you put it in reverse) when the low/reverse band breaks, and car won't move in Drive.

Oh my god. A little over a year ago I had to rebuild the trans in in my 97 1500 A518OD . One of the club members in our car club re and re,d it as well as doing the rebuild and it cost me 1000.00 and change. Too bad you guys are so far away. he does lots of trans for club members. Retired Chrysler mechanic from late 60's.
Re: Transmission help: rebuild vs buy used/new
thanks for both replies.
is it pretty hard to give a quote for transmission you have not seen?
since truck wont run, id have to tow it in.

Re: Transmission help: rebuild vs buy used/new
Not really. Typically when a rebuild is done, most of the same wearable parts are always replaced, unless its major or minor. The only way to know is to get on the phone. Ask for both prices; towed in or a bench job. Removal and installation could save you as much as half but may void or only offer a partial warranty. I personally wouldn't attempt to rebuild it without a lot of experience. One little mistake and when you have to do it again.dlynes wrote: is it pretty hard to give a quote for transmission you have not seen?

If you view this D200 as a refurbish/restore type of project, I'd suggestdlynes wrote:thanks for both replies.

pulling the engine and tranny out together. Invest $35 in a good sturdy
engine stand so you can clean/assess the engine. It'll more than likely
need attention....
Spend a hour or so and de-grease the tranny before taking it anywhere.
Look around your area for a reputable transmission shop and call them
to let them know what you have [727 LoadFlite]. A friend of mine rebuilt
my 727 TorqueFlite for $180 in parts.

Re: Transmission help: rebuild vs buy used/new
That's just a estimate on my part, would never have a shop do it in a vehicle...I do 99% of all my work on my vehicles except bodywork. It's just the answer I got 3 or 4 years ago from a shop.dodgeboykim wrote:nytemuvr wrote:Out here in No. California, about $1500-$2000 to install your tranny

Re: Transmission help: rebuild vs buy used/new
I definitely will not attempt to rebuild it but if I can some money but removing/installing it vs. price of warranty or no warranty, i'll do it.mopardwh wrote:Not really. Re: Transmission help: rebuild vs buy used/new
Some places advertise rebuilt transmissions, you just take your's out & exchange it for the new one. Usually cheaper than having your's rebuilt.
Look at some of the Mopar car websites. Aftermarket stuff is more commonly advertised there.
Is your's long tailshaft or short?
