Bought a '68 D100 (almost)

A gentleman from our tractor club claims to have a '68 D100 short bed with a 440. We talked about the truck and he told me it's rust free with two small dents in the bed were he turned to sharp both ways while towing. He says he bought it new and has about 150,000 miles on it.

It's a custom cab and he says it has a factory aluminum grill? Any body ever see an aluminum grill for a sweptiline?

Although I haven't seen the truck we agreed on trading my Cat D2 for it and he going to deliver it in about a week. Happy Happy Happy!!

I have an aluminum grill on my 68.

68-71 had optional bright aluminum grills. Prior to 68 the bright grills are chrome plated steel.
440 was NEVER a factory engine in a swept. 383, 361 and 413's only big blocks.
Be careful, many times a rust free claim is merely because the owner doesn't know where to look!
150k is a hellva lot on a swept, hope its had regular and extensive maintenance!
At least he didn't claim it was only "50,000 original miles!" I get so sick of seeing that!

I always thought the aluminum ones were way more common actually. I've only ever found a couple of steel ones. If he's telling you it has the original 440 and he's the original owner, you should really doubt his integrity. Personally, a 440 sounds like a better deal than an original motor anyway. Either way, I think you should check it out really good yourself before you make the deal.

Aluminum grilles were more common on the later Sweptlines.

We have our tractors on display at the fair, when I see him tonight I'll quiz him on the engine size.

If it hasn't been abused I would think a 150,000 isn't that bad for a truck of it's age. The calculator says it's average is 4,000 miles a year.

He says everything works and most of us who are into collectables are pretty strait with each other. I plan on giving it to the woman to drive, now all three of us will have a Sweptline. Me = 68 W300 (Mc Mobile), woman = 68 D100 short bed, son = 65 D100 short bed.

Ok he said the 383 was rebuilt 2x. The second time it spun a rod bearing so he put a used 440. So the 440 has lots of miles on it but still runs. Hopefully in a few weeks I'll get it.

Any idea what the 440 is rated for HP?

The rear end went out a while back and he put a 3:30ish gear ratio so hopefully it won't be running lots of rpm and get ok mileage.

I'm letting him take the D2 home after the fair next week. He's delivering the truck later after he gets It up and running. We discussed the truck WILL start and drive off the trailer under it's own power. He said the starter needs rebuilding and the tires won't hold air. So hopefully he will take care of me. This will be my first time buying/trading for something I've never seen before..... but at least I got a good mental picture of what I'm buying. And we live in a dry climate so hopefully the rust will be minimal.

The HP depends on the year of the engine....
If its a later ['75-'78-ish] standard 4bbl 440, it
might be pushing 265-285hp or so.....

Hopefully your mental picture is a close match for what you're actually
getting. Post up pics when you can.

I'm excited about trading for something I've never seen! The fair is over tomorrow and he's taking the D2 home Monday and suppose to deliver the truck in a couple weeks. The gentleman I'm getting the truck from is 68 and retired. Hopefully he has no reason to lie or miss lead me about the truck. I realize it's old and has 150,000 + miles on it.

I was quizing him about rust and he still says non that he is aware of. It has carpet so it might be hiding floor board rust. I was surprised that it has 31" tires on it. He installed them to get more freeway speed.

Usually does and is usually worse due to the jute holding the water for a looooooooong time!

Peel both sides of that carpet back to expose all
of the floorboards right up to the drive shaft tunnel.
