Ok I have a 68 d100 with a 318 A727. Its original and all but I would like an overdrive or a 4th gear cuz I plan on making this a cruiser and would like to be able to drive down the highway at 65. Or is there a better gear setup than the 3.55 that is from the factory. Also I am a poor s.o.b. and trying to do this as cheap as possible, I know transmissions and the like can be expensive but I have a local salvage yard that has a ton of transmissions I can get for cheap. Any help is appreciated....when it comes to transmissions and gearing I am pretty much clueless

Stop at the pick & pull and start looking at 1988 to 1992 Dodge
Vans. On The Drivers Side look for a O/D push button.
This is the Torque-Flite Over Drive Unit that will bolt to any 318
Engine. Take the Push Button Switch on the Van Dash with as
much wiring as possible and as much as the wiring to the plugs
at the transmission.
This transmision was not made before 1988 and the ones after
1992 will need the computor that is with it.
Your 3.55:1 Ratio that you have is perfect.

If you're not planning on doing any heavy hauling or towing, you
could also give thought to picking up a 3.23 or 2.94 gear chunk.
The swap is easy..... takes about 3 or 4 hours and for the price
of the gear set, axle tube seals & flange seals, you'd be way
ahead of going the tranny swap route. I threw a 2.94 chunk
into my '65 D100 [NP 435 4spd] and it cruises nicely at 65mph.

My 87 D150 has 318 - automatic with 2.71 Gearing /This is factory,had 215-78-15 tires on it/I put 235-78-15's on it /Kind of took some of the Horses away but will get as good MPG as our 98 1500 4x4-360 auto-3.55 /they both run about 16-20 /city to highway.

You can also look for V-8 Dodge Dakotas or Ram Pickups. The transmissions are from 1988 to 1995 and they have to be gas powered 318 engines. The 360/5.9 is different as is the Diesel. Make sure the transmission you select has a 3 pin white connector that means it has a lock up torque converter and is a 46RH which is hydro controlled. If it has 8 pin black connector it is a 46RE which is electronic control. (there is also a 3 pin connector on all the A518 transmissions for neutral safety and reverse lights) I am running one with a 4.10 behind my 1965 Poly motor and love the set up. Grab all the linkage and wiring that you can from the donor vehicle. There is also a throttle valve/detent cable that is like a kickdown cable...grab that too as well as the bracket on the manifold. You will have to fab up a cable bracket. Getting the transmission lines may be a good idea as well. You can buy the vacuum switch and pressure switches you need for the conversion at most transmission supply shops. Check out my build thread I have a little information on the swap I did. The connector on the left is the 46RE, you do not want that one the one on the right is the 46RH and it is the correct one.

Now, if you do not want a lockup converter in your transmission the white connector will only have 2 pins in there. I have lockup and it works well.
