There is no easy way out here, you need a turn signal switch.
The brake light feed from the brake switch goes up the column to the turn signal switch that is CLOSED on BOTH sides so when you hit the brakes power goes up the column to the switch then to both REAR turn lights.
When you hit the turn signal to signal a turn it disconnects it from the brake feed and connects it to the turn feed (blinker) and the same time connecting it to the front turn light.
For a temp fix forget turn signals and connect the brake switch to the rear turn lights.
The turn signal switch is the most complex piece of engineering in the electrical system, it is no wonder they don't fail more often.

Had a similar problem many years ago. I "solved" the problem by drilling a hole in each taillight housing and installing another bulb socket. The original lights became just running and brake lights. The new bulbs along with new wiring became a separate circuit for just the turn signals. Still functioning after 15 years.
