whats up with these doors????

Post by wideblock »

you know i have owned from 1963 thru 1971 sweptlines, and numerous ones down the middle. all of them have had door issues i had to correct, we have all been there, push button don't work, the catch is wore out, inside handle wont open the door, etc etc etc. but you would think 20 years later they would have sorted it out. my 89 is giving me fits trying to get the doors to work. it started with the drivers door outside push button wouldn't release the catch. i really don't see anything wrong with it, so i oiled it real good but didn't get anything fixed. shortly after oiling the inside handle on the passenger door quit working, the little plastic clip that holds the rod in place broke, and as of yet i haven't located any more to replace it with. but now, im at the Walgreen's and i cant get out of the truck. the drivers inside stopped working as well, its hooked up, just wont release the latch. so now the only way to get in or out of the truck is with the outside passengers button. kinda sucks.

any of you guys know anything about the late 80s doors and what i might look at to get them working right? they shut good, alignment is nice, they just wont open after you close them.

wideblock wrote:...i wanted a beater to use around the house, and it looks like that's exactly what i got...the doors have to be slammed with all your might to shut all the way, the drivers door wont open from the outside and the passenger door wont open from the inside...i was gonna pick a model that i really had no interest in "fixin up" so i would leave it alone and just let it serve its purpose as a work truck....that's what i got

The doors on my W200 are both missing the bottom hinge due to rust but they work better than the doors on my 95 Dodge Ram Van. So i feel the pain.

I had a simialar problem with my '90 when I bought it. The previous owner had yanked on the outside handle so hard for so long it was tearing the sheet metal around the handle. It ended up being the door latch, I think I paid $150 from dodge a year ago. hope this helps.

its also a 70s design problem. the door is heavy for the way the handle is mounted. if you got the time and talent to do so, i would put newer handles in.

got it all worked out. wound up taking the entire assembly out of the door and giving it a really good cleaning. scraped out tons of trash, and a lot of paint over spray off the mechanism. they work pretty good now.
