'61 Fargo- jgeebee63
It has been a really good few days. I went to visit my cousin, Duane yesterday. Duane is directly responsible for my Sweptline addiction. He has had this '61 Fargo truck since high school. It is the first Sweptline truck I ever saw or rode in, so it means something to me.
It is a '61 W-100 Powerwagon with a 318 poly and NP 435 4 speed. It originally came with a 7.5 or 8 foot Sweptline box, but Duane added a shortbox, as the truck has a short wheel base.
Duane drove it like that for quite a while and swapped some 1/2 ton axles under the truck, but never finished hooking up the steering, as life got in the way of building the truck. The stock axles are still around, and I am unsure if I want to put them back under the truck. The disc brakes on the 1/2 ton axles would be awfully nice to have.
The truck has a cherry grille, which is surprising considering the truck was used on a farm. The front bumper has been rechromed, and the truck has dual exhaust and a fuel tank out of a ramcharger mounted behind the rear axle. The tank is not hooked up yet. The front fenders and headlight bezels are in the back of the truck under the topper.
I made a deal with him to buy it and the '63 sitting next to it. There is some horsetrading involved, but we got it done.
That '63 is a truck I used to own for a while and is the reason I have jgeebee63 as my user name.
It has a 273 out of a '65 Barracuda in it and a three on the tree. Duane and his dad bought that truck in Columbia Falls, Montana back in the late '80's from a wrecking yard down there. I was with them when they bought it, which was for the short bed that is now on the '61.
Logan's Pass is a very scenic, but treacherous winding mountain road that goes between Columbia Falls and Babb, Montana. Duane and I drove that '63 over Logan's Pass with the three on the tree popping out of second gear on the way up. We never bothered to check the brakes when we fired it up in the wrecking yard, but managed to get it down the other side with out driving off a cliff. We were both young and stupid, as I have been over that road in vehicles that cost a lot more than $400.00 and it is still a pretty hair raising trip at the best of times. We laughed about that over the weekend.
Anyway, I am excited to get the truck home and start working on it. I didn't plan on getting it, but when it came available I jumped at it.
The '63 will donate a few things to get my '67 going, but will be a future 4 eye build.

Wow! That Fargo is way cool. I have never seen a short wheel based longbed. Hope your cousin can get it back on the road someday.

I was able to buy the Fargo and the '63 as a package deal, so I will get the Fargo running first, then the '63 at some point after that.MOPAR70 wrote:Wow! That Fargo is way cool. I have never seen a short wheel based longbed. Hope your cousin can get it back on the road someday.

Can't wait to see the progress on that Fargo. That is the strangest box I've ever seen. Are you saying it was factory original or did some company convert it? Are there any SERT numbers that correspond with it?

Great score! Nice stainless trim
on that W100.
I haven't seen any '61 Power
Wagons with the stainless
trim. That's one rare bird.

Wow! I've never seen a long box like that. I hope that was included in the deal you made? Make sure you get it raised out of the weeds; stop the chance of any rusting
Did your cousin end up shortening the frame to accomodate the short box?
Nice truck!!

Re: '61 Fargo- jgeebee63
The box is included. The frame did not need to be shortened. It is a short wheel base truck from the factory, and the original box has the wheel opening the same distance from the front of the bed as a factory short box does, just that the sides are longer. It looks a little funny, in my opinion but sure is neat.66Fargocrewcab wrote:Wow! I've never seen a long box like that. I hope that was included in the deal you made? I will get it off the ground as soon as I can. Consider your two cents well spent!

Thanks for the compliment on the truck.
My first truck was a '68 Fargo D-100 shorty, so I am glad to have a Fargo back in the family again.

Re: '61 Fargo- jgeebee63
That '61 in Serbia is a neat truck. It is cool to hear how trucks wind up where they do, especially in a place as far away as that.
I am pretty sure that my truck was bought new in Cardston, Alberta from a Dodge dealer there, by the farmer that my cousin bought the truck from.
One interesting fact is that the original box doesn't show any sign of ever having had the stainless trim on it. No clips, holes or anything.

Re: '61 Fargo- jgeebee63
Was it possible that the 61 Fargo
was the first long bed before the frames became
122 ' long ?
Maybe all the trucks were short 114 " to start with :thinkinghttp://www.sweptline.org/forums/download/file. ... &mode=view
That could be a factory drag racer .

All that box hanging behind the rear tires would sure help plant the rear tires, for sure!

I really like the look of some of the gasser Sweptline trucks I've seen on this site, and online. That may be a good idea to build that '63 D-100 as a gasser.

Re: '61 Fargo- jgeebee63
Sorry, I wasn't clear with my question....was the frame after the rear differential longer to accomodate the long box or does it stop in the same location as the short box frame? Does that make sense?jgeebee63 wrote:The box is included. The frame did not need to be shortened. Re: '61 Fargo- jgeebee63
I will have to find out if the frame was shortened at all at the rear to put the short bed on. I get what you are asking
I will look when I get the original bed off the ground how it attached at the rear. You would think it would need some kind of frame extension between the truck frame and bumper.
Interesting....
