8 bolt disk brakes
i was at the pull a part today and was looking at a 86 ford 3/4 ton with some kind og link pin front end with disk brakes. has anyone tried to use the spindels off the ford on say a d200? looks like it might be a cheap way to put 8 lug disk brakes on , what you think? am i not seeing to whole picture?

Keep us posted !!! I was doing research a while back on front disc swap, but got busy with life and had to shelf it. Come springtime I'll probly get back to it? AT any rate it seems no-one wants to share what works for 3/4 ton disc swap unless they bought it in akit. It would be REALLY nice to know if this pans out for you

Re: 8 bolt disk brakes
Steven has disc brakes on the front of his D200. Search for his posts. I know he made his own brackets.
I'd like to see if this Ford setup works too.

Re: 8 bolt disk brakes
It's been a while since I looked into the same thing and if my memory serves me right, you could use the Ford spindles. You would have to have the axle bent to obtain the correct camber and use a spacer between the spindle and axle. Also, I think the kingpin diameters are slightly different so you would have to machine either part.
For my 68, I used Chevy rotors because their width was narrow enough for the Dodge spindle length. Then I bolted a 1/4" round plate to the spindle which is used to mount a Dodge caliper. I've attached the only picture I have right now. Let me know if you need more information and I will be happy to help.

Re: 8 bolt disk brakes
I just emailed scarebird to his ebay account, he said he does not have brake conversion for 8 lugs..I did some research and found a webiste where a guy took all the parts from a 3/4 ton chevy front axle to do the conversion. http://www.offroadexchange.com/diskbrakeswap.htm
Re: 8 bolt disk brakes
I would like to write up a tech article about my 68 D-200 Camper Special disc brake conversion, but I just don't have any spare time right now.
Here is my parts list:
-1985 Chevy rotors (Dodge and Ford rotors are too wide for our spindle length).
-Custom bearing spacers to adapt the Dodge bearings in the Chevy rotor (if I were to do it again, I'd use the Chevy bearings and make sleeves for the spindle).
-1/4" thick round plate, OD slightly smaller than the ID on the rotor backside, see picture from previous post (around 9"-10"). The ID is a slight press fit on our Dodge spindle. Then transfer punch marks on the plate using the four holes in the spindle as a guide and bolt together using grade-8 fine thread bolts and red loctite.
-1977 Dodge 3/4 ton calipers bolt to the aformentioned 1/4" plate using spacers to center it over the rotor.
-Brake hoses same as calipers.
-One-piece threaded shaft collar (I think 9/16"-18, verify first) inplace of factory nut, keeper and cotter pin.
-Grease seal I don't have the number right now (give the OD, ID and thickness to any bearing supplier and they should be able to help you).
Hope this helps.

Either that, or he hasn't got the foggiest that on Dodges 3/4 ton = 8 lug. Just my guess.

Well it says D250 calipers and rotors are used. Something just doesn't add up.We now offer a simple disc conversion for your classic Dodge 1957-71 3/4 ton 2WD truck. This uses D250 rotors and calipers with our bracket; you will machine the outer edge of your existing drum hubs, and replace the studs. Brackets are zinc plated when available, plain steel if not. Auction is for both sides, and for the brackets and banjo bolts only.

Re: 8 bolt disk brakes
Just got an email back from Scarebird and they sent me the instructions on the D200 install. The brackets are part (SNW) $185.
Sorry about the formatting.
1958-71 Dodge 3/4 ton Pickup w/2800lb axle Front Disc brake conversion
1. Crack front wheel nuts loose, chock up rear wheels. Jack up front end of car, support outer control arms with jackstands. Remove front wheels, drum/hub assembly. Put a few drops of penetrant oil, such as AeroKroil on brakeline nuts where they screw into rubber lines.
2. Take drum/hub assembly and remove drum by using a swedge cutter on the base of the studs, then pressing out and discard studs. Clean off wheel surface and register with wire wheel or beadblaster. Machine outer edge of hub flange to fit inside rotor with about 0.010” loose fit. This is important, as it is what centers the rotor on the hub. Replace studs with ¼” longer or more studs. Mopar used several different suppliers for the drums, and they had 3 different sized studs. Dorman 610-103 is one. Best approach is to use an ARP or Moser stud and cut down to length. We used Raybestos #6249B or NAPA 641-3115.
3. Disconnect brake flexible line at frame by unscrewing hardline nut with flare wrench, then removing nut. Undo and remove drum retaining bolts. Remove drum backing plate, hose and all drum hardware in one assembly. Clean off spindle assembly well.
4. Place adapter plate over spindle with caliper bolt retaining nut welds facing inward, and caliper opening to the rear. Make sure no dirt is lodged between spindle and plate.
5. Verify that rotor lays flat against hub by fitting rotor backwards onto hub. If the stud knurls interfere with rotor, countersink stud holes in rotor to clear knurls.
6. Clean and repack wheel bearings. Install new seal. Assemble hub onto spindle, tighten outer nut to spec, then secure with keeper, new cotter pin and dustcap.
7. Place rotor onto hub, and run two or three lugnuts down finger tight to retain rotor. Wipe down rotor with alcohol, lacquer thinner or other cleaner.
8. Wash hands! Rotor must be squeaky clean.
9. Slide assembly into caliper bracket. Make sure bleed nipple faces up. We recommend buying loaded calipers, but if buying pads separately use caliper application below. Tighten caliper bolts to 35 foot-pounds. Check fitment and rotate rotor to check clearance. Install flex lines.
10. Master cylinder and proportioning valve specs are quite varied. I would recommend 1972 D/W 200 or similar disc master cylinder for best performance match available in both power and manual flavors. Plumb in an adjustable proportion valve in the line going to the rear cylinders, or use a disc proportioning valve if rears suffer from excessive lockup in panic stops.
11. Bench bleed disc master cylinder. Mount MC on car, then gravity bleed entire system first to eliminate most of the air, then pump bleed and test, otherwise your distribution block may jam from a pressure imbalance.
12. Replace wheels, install lug nuts, lower car and torque nuts to spec. Test drive carefully- no hard stops, a series of 30 smooth stops from 30 mph, with a 30 second cooling period between stops will bed in the pads properly. Let cool for an hour after finished bedding.
