voltage regulator compatability

Post by muddyoldman »

Is it possible to use the original 68 alt. (one field wire) with a post 70 voltage regulator?

Not without modifying the alternator. Easy if you have the old one and can put them side by side. Erik

I did notice on the back of the alt. where there is a location for the second field. so how do I check it to see if it is connected to anything?

I looked at this and it's not really feasible. There is no easy way to insulate the second field terminal, since the stock intention is to ground it to the alternator case. I just upgraded to a 2-wire alternator and added a wire to the harness back to the regulator.

One brush is grounded to the alt case with the one wire regulator. The two wire regulator has the second brush isolated and the current is regulated by how much ground the alternator field coil "sees"through the voltage regulator. To switch styles, just take out the little screw on the grounded brush, take off the strap that makes the ground connection and replace it with the spade connector from the other alternator. Make sure that neither of the small terminals has continuity to the alternator case and generate away. Erik
