New member... I have an odd Situation D100

Post by VolksD100 »

Hi everyone,

First of all I want to say great site.. I found out about scarebird brakes from someones thread on this site.

Ok so what I have is (on the registration) a 1972, but after going to a Dodge only junkyard in Spring Valley CA and numerous other people say I have an oddball, most people think it is a 72 with alot of 71 parts on it.

I have 4 wheel drums, and manual brake (non power) master, and fuel tank behind the seat.

I love the truck and do not plan on gettin rid of it...

I hope you guys will accept me since I'm not 100% sweptline!

Here is a current picture

There is another member here that has a 72 and OK to be here. Well he also has 64 but he found out his 72 is actually built in 71 I think, maybe that is what you have.

Your 72 has drum brakes because for the first year of production for these trucks, they were the standard brakes. Disc brakes were optional. I found that out when I got a 72 chassis to put my 66 body on. The tank was behind the seat for the first 2 or 3 years IIRC. I remember seeing a dual tank optioned 4wd truck that came into the gas station I worked at a looooooooooooooooong time ago. There was a tank in the cab and under the bed, but the fill neck was in the cab. When you took the cap off, there were two passages you could stick the neck into. Not sure why I brought that up,.. but anyway. :thinking

What I think you have is a bare bones truck. Could have been a fleet truck of some sort. Nothing wrong with a bare bones truck because there is less to maintain and repair. :Thumbsup The Moparts forum has a really active group of guys with the "newer" 72 - 93 trucks. Just in case you were looking for such a place.

My '73 W200 had that very set up. Everything worked good except the seat tank would spill over into the frame mounted tank. I never liked that and ended up putting a steel tank back where the spare was and doing away with the double fill.

Everyone seems to forget that model yrs start in Sep of the previous yr. So of course there were thousands of 72's that were built in calendar yr 71!

Fleet vehicle yes, bare bones yes. The VIN sticker says prod date 0472

It started it's life as a Florida County roads vehicle.. It was still kind of orange when I got it a few months back...

According to the Previous Owner I am the 5th owner of the truck...

That's right. And my '01 Ram has a build date of 1-00. The 2000 MY was very short for some reason.

that would be me lol...my 72 was built in 71, and is titled as such since 71. I'm not saying its a 71 or 72, but I know its a 72 body with 71 drivetrain and such. I originally thought it was built 1/71, but after cleaning the sticker, there was the other 1, making it a 11/71, but 72 production

as far as the drums, go to a 74+ d100, pop off at ball joints, or unbolt the hubs and swap...mine came with drums, but now sports discs

as far as power brakes, go to any 72+ d100/d200 and pull the power booster...depending on if you have a 2 or 4 bolt master, it might be a direct bolt on...you might have to clearance the firewall holes

need anything else, or part specific pics, let me know

Oh.. :welcome and nice truck :salut

Kevin, your truck is a 72, period.
It won't have a 71 drivetrain from the factory.
Your title is irrelevant. If it is a CA title, it may say "Year first sold" - "1971". That means NOTHING as far as what model year it is. Regardless, the year on the title from EVERY state is irrelevant.
In Nov 71, they didn't build some bastardized truck on an assembly line that was tooled up to build 72 model yr trucks.
U might consider updating your signature line if that is the truck u list as a 71.
When u buy parts, u will need to tell them it is a 72.

Its pointless to argue what year it is. I know its a 72.

yes it does have 71 drivetrain. numbers on the engine and tranny come back for a 71.

if the year on the title were irrelevant, then I could use the title for my 63 for the 72, or I could tell the officer that pulled me over to ignore the 1971 on my title...its really a 2010 model

if on the assembly line they don't improvise parts, then WHY do I have a 3/73 Lincoln with a 72 and older rear brake cylinder ONLY on ONE side, which has never been replaced since my grampa bought the car

I will not update my sig, because it has always been known as the half breed, hence 1971 1/2

no I don't tell them 72. the majority of 72 parts do NOT work well. We have run into too many situations buying 72 parts that DON'T fit unless they are body parts

U misunderstand the point Kevin.

TITLE yr is irrelevant in regards to the MODEL yr. Model yr has nothing to do with a cop on the side of the road.

Im quite certain that engines and trannies are not date coded and installed only in specific model yrs in that era. Are u saying that there are significant enough differences between a 71 and 72 engine and trans that parts are not interchangeable? Is that the sole basis for your claim that it has a 71 drivetrain?

Actually, "71 drivetrain" is kind of vague. To be more specific, let me ask u this:
Does it have a Sweptline frame, axles and all related parts, driveshaft, wiring harnesses, radiator, motor mounts, alternator, power steering, steering gear, tie rods and drag link, springs, shocks, air conditioning, GVW, smog controls, etc, etc, etc?

Do u think that engine blocks and tranny cases were cast in exact quantities to match the exact number of vehicles built each yr?
I think not and I also think u are making a way big deal out of nothing. Im sure there are thousands of castings that were used in yrs other than only in the one they were cast.

Call it a 71.5 if it makes u feel good, but in reality there is no such thing.

It's not at all uncommon for drive train pieces to be built anywhere from a week to several months before they are installed on the assembly line which COULD mean some of your drive train could have been built near the middle of '71. Doesn't mean the parts are not '72 parts. Like I mentioned in my earlier post, my '01 Ram was built in January of 2000. That doesn't make the drive train a 2000 model year drive train.

Russ, built in January 2000 would mean your engine was cast in 1999.
So what do u call a truck with a 99 engine, assembled in 2000 and classified a 2001???

Ok, so I got some "loaded" spindles from a 78 D150, they have everything, rotors, pads, calipers, etc etc.

Do I have to do anything to the porportioning valve when I find a brake booster, I picked one up out of a montego cause it looked beefy.... And because I had a (ford) friend suggest it

Still searching for the booster though...

Soon I'll be able to stop!!!

I would recommend grabbing the prop valve from the '78 Dodge truck you robbed the disc brakes from. There isn't much you can do to the original drum one, but it is a very easy swap (just swap over the brake lines to the same positions), and you're done. You should also update your master cylinder if it is still the original from drum brakes.
