Tranny Cooler

Looking at several different tranny coolers as my existing one is in need of replacing. Nothing fancy and not towing anything.

Myself I would like the larger of the two shown in the upper
link. It reminds me of the Dodge Truck OEM Unit found at
our local pick & pull that is about $6.00 each.

Don't recall ever seeing the rail type before but I'm not so fond of it. They are most effective with lots of airflow over them. Can't see how that would happen so well tucked inside the framerail. :thinking I'd go with the first one and make some mounts for it to go ahead of your radiator. Then be sure you have good draw through from the engine fan. Should be able to suck a sheet of paper up to it and hold it from a couple inches away. And always over estimate the GVW. Automatics don't fail from running cool, but from running hot. :study

They are more expensive, but the B&M plate Super Coolers are excellent. Not only do they cool more
efficiently, but they are built much tougher. Bugs will not beat them up, heck average size birds
probably wouldn't do any damage either! While it might seem like overkill, considering you probably
will not have to replace it in the future, could make it a worthy investment.

I run the medium sized one, 13,000 btu on my crew cab, as the only cooler on the trans.
My temps rarely get above 165 degrees. In the cooler months, the gauge doesn't move!

I snagged a nice factory unit off a late model F-150 at the yard last year. It was a pseudo plate
style cooler, much heavier than the flimsy aluminum finned ones. The decent trans coolers run
about $12-$15 around here.

Is there an operating temp range the trannys should run at, or the cooler the better?
1969 D-100 Adventurer (with 70/71 grill), 383/727, Weiand Action Plus Intake, 600 carb, Hedman 79250 Headers, Factory A/C, PS, 8 3/4 (489)with 3.23 gears.
