Cummins Conversions

Post by rx1mtnman »

Maybe there already is a thread somewhere else but how about a Cummins Conversion thread? A question that I have is for those that cut a hole in the firewall so the could run the stock intercooler. Did you look at other intercoolers or has anyone tried making their own instead?

If my memory serves me well, I think their is only 2 Sweptlines with Cummings, one in North or South Dakota (Cageman} and one in California (PowerWagonDriver) I believe Cageman posted his build thread, I know he uses it to pull his race cars.

You do not need a hole in firewall if you use a 99-01 powerstroke intercooler they mount better it will be tight to adjust the valves on #6 cyl but do able i will try to take some pics this weekend.
The one that runs 71 d-100 sb 440,727 3.91spool
Half parted out 71 d-100 sb

I would definitely like to see the pics as well. Not really looking forward to cutting a hole in the firewall if there is another way....

I have a whole thread on here somewhere, it was a few years ago, but no, I didnt cut the firewall, and I have the intercooler in there. I cut the center out of the rad support and some on each side, but that was for ac condenser clearance only, I think it would clear no problem. I moved the battery over and put a BHAF into the pass fender, so that was notched too.

Image

this one was before I made all the fancy alum battery box and air filter shroud. I probably just got it running this picture, or first road trip, man that was a good feeling. I have put 40,000 miles on it now, and it has another 250,000 left in it before I need to do anything to it.
Image

I deleted the fan completely and monted an 8 inch elec fan on the engine side. I made a shroud that covered half the rad. I have heard the fan come on maybe two times. Runs 180 all the time. Now you might say, oh you live in ND, but I have driven it in AZ when it was 125 degrees pulling a loaded trailer. Dont know why it ever had a fan to begin with. I could honestly not even use a fan at all. Just make sure you have an overflow recovery tank on the radiator.

Buck, did you change your mind again, I thought the Cummins and Allison was for sale? You still haven't taken that pic but if you have the industrial version you don't need a after cooler. The industrial or stationary engine the hot air is cooled by the water. If you look above the injection pump you can see what I'm talking about.... but a pic would be nice :banghead LoL

rx, I used a F-350 radiator and cooler because there about 25% bigger than the Dodge diesel version. I'm only running a small electric fan and I have no heating issues at all, and my truck is tall and weights 10K empty. The problem is the Ferd rad. is tall. So I had to put a body lift on and lean it back so the hood would close.

I also went ahead and cut the firewall back 9" so I can set the heavy engine back a bit. Using the Ferd cooler and radiator I don't see how it could possible fit without breaking out the jig saw.

The other issue is gear ratio. I'm running 3:73 with a 35.5" tire and at 60 mph in direct it's running 2,100 rpm. Great rpm for towning but not cruising. So make sure you find an OD transmission. If you go with an auto try to get a pre '95. Then you can bypass the brain (computer) and switch it into OD and lock the torque converter via toggle switches. So if you stopped with the converter locked it would stall the engine. Think how cool you would be crusing down the highway and flick a switch and your into OD :Thumbsup

calling bull *#%^ on that statement...lol... you wont kill the truck if you forget to turn off the lock up, thats a myth. the lock up is only enabled when the trans is in over drive. once it down shifts, the lockup lets go. you can leave the switch on 24/7 and never stall the engine, makes overdrive a bog when it does shift and locks right away, but it wont hurt anything. with the pre 95 trans you can run pressure switches on the od and the lock up that allow it to be totally brainless operation like the original. we used the pressure switches, with a switch backup on the lock up. makes climbing a hill easier if you can unlock the convertor and it wont lock back up until you decide its time. other wise it will bounce in and out as you climb the hill.

Got any other source to back it up?

At least your caps lock wasn't stuck on this time LoL.

I've been tossing around putting an auto in my truck and thats how the tranny guy explained it to me. The brain is what unlocks the converter when it shifts down but if toggle switches are used it has to be done manually to keep from stalling.

It isn't exactly a swepty, but I had a chance at one of the swingfender Dodge heavy trucks (1964) with a Cummins L10 installed. I missed it by $100. It's probably within 50 miles of New Plymouth, Id. where it was auctioned off. There was also a D500 with a 4 speed Brownie installed, kind of cool.

Delivery vans use them, several different manufacturers, such as Grumman, Flxible, and GM have used them
