The dilemma of were to mount speakers has been solved boys . The kick panel is always a good spot but the fender well support is right in the way. The support is 5 1/4" from the door jam so I bought some 4x10's. Mounting them next to the support they fit perfectly inside the kick panel lip. A 6x9 would give more sound but would have been mounted up on the lip and not fit as nice.
I also bought two 8" woofers to put behind the seat so hopefully with the 4x10's will give enough mid and highs to hear while trucking down the road.
The other tall stick is for the low, direct, high, Brownie Box thats mounted behind the the transfer case. The 3rd short lever works the bed mounted wicked winch.
I was wondering what all those shifters were for in your first picture!! Also, is that your truck in the video? LOTS of shifting... My arm got tired just watching it ...
Mike Here is my thoughts on your speakers. They look nice because you can hardly even see them. They blend in with the black interior well. I like how they are almost flush too. Should work out pretty good with a nice radio. I "think" some others have done this, but I can't recall seeing any photos of them installed.
Good placement. I plan on posting pics of mine. I put them behind the seat, easier shown then explained. Hey maybe we can work off of eachother and wind up with 5 speakers in each truck or something. I'll try to get pics.
hope you put some dyna matt or something in that cavity or they are gonna sound like crap. for the majority who have standard cab trucks, there is a better alternative made by one of our very own members.
hand laid fiberglass enclosure, dynamatt across factory panel to eliminate vibration.
Obviously you've done a bit of work on it and it is not a weenie 1/2 ton. I put my speakers on the kick panels with industrial strength Velcro. Been there about 10 years and still grip like when I put them in.
Mike, the placement looks good, they don't grab your attention being black on black, looks like they belong there.
When I was finishing up my D300, I kept looking into what to do for audio, I wanted to leave the factory am radio in its location, but I didn't want to go without any music. Ended up at best buy and bought 2 speaker enclosure and an under-dashmount enclosure. I had to remove the seat to do the work, made it alot easier anyways, but the speaker enclosures fit tight between the cab and the back of the seat (I removed the in-cab tank and put on a saddle tank) and I mounted the head unit in the enclosure on the floor under the drivers seat. Still takes a little getting use to trying to point the remote under the seat, but once I get some drivetime under it, I'm sure it won't be a problem. I was trying to keep an original look and the way everything fit, you wouldn't know the system was there until you started really looking around. Works for me!
71 swept, I think the 4x10 speakers look really good mounted in the kick panels. Hopefully with some backing they'll sound good and have enough clarity to listen to classic rock and pop while trucking down the highway
Since my dash has already been drilled and cut I just went ahead and cut a spot for the deck too.
That would be tricky pointing the remote backward but at least you don't have to lean under the seat to change stations.
I like your aviator. Is it an old Dodge? Kinda looks like a Mack, share some info.
You guys with tunes are lucky, looks like some really creative work!!! My truck never had a radio and is just too original to do any hacking on, but oh well. I love the times when my oldest daughter would be in the truck with me riding through the country, we would sing songs together, I guess not having a radio is not so bad after all.
Wally, I like the way you mounted your deck so I copied you . But my dash was in premium condition before I got out the jig saw .
At first I put all the toggle switches in the dash... way to hard and tough on the old body wiring under the dash. So I cut a big hole and mounted the switches on a hinged plate. Much much easier to work on now. I figured with every thing else being modified why stop at the dash.
Doc, we all must have a screw or two loose to enjoy these old trucks LoL. I find it peaceful listening to my ipod loaded with easy and classic rock while trucking down the highway.
Wally, don't get to excited... thats were the deck face attaches. They have decks at JC Whitney with USB ports for less than $100. My $95 JC W. deck has the mini ear phone plug so I can play my i phone. Yes I realize USB will play it too but then you have to control the music from the deck. Easier for me to control with i phone sitting in lap but the nice thing about USB is it also charges the i phone.
I agree, there was a member who posted pics of one recently with USB. I've tried attaching an Ipod with the red & white cables and it only played out of the rear speakers. Kooky.
There's some pretty nice installs there. I like the speakers beside the fuel tank, out of sight and out of the way.
On my 65 D100 I had a pair of Bass48s mounted to the back of the cab either side of the narrow window. Right one was hooked up to the factory AM, left one was hooked to the CB. That old AM radio had cleaner sound than some of the newer FM units, and back then (some 2 decades ago) there was actually something worth listening to around here on AM.
Previous owner cut up the dash on my 70 to install a cheap AM/FM/Casstte deck then they wired all the speaker wires to one speaker mounted under the dash. Sounds bad as it looks. Future plans include changing the dash and installing a stock radio, maybe I'll put a newer deck under the dash.
