Does the 68 W200 look better with newer sheet metal or the original style?

You Decide

Post by OldD200 »

You Decide

My 68 W200 came with newer sheet metal on the front end. It was pretty straight, and I even found myself toying with keeping it. I put a 68 grill and hood on it today, and “Aaahhhhhh” no doubt, she’s gonna have 68 metal on it. The older metal looks so much tougher. I am keeping the newer fenders since they’re in excellent condition. I’ll weld up the marker lamps, and extra holes the newer side badging uses. I’m planning to powder coat a good grill (when I get one), the right and left side stem mirrors, hood Power Wagon emblems and all 4 wheels white. No chrome, except the door handles, maybe. :thinking Gonna repaint the body Desert Turquoise.

I’ve made my decision, but tell me what you think. Do you like the newer hood and bright grill or the 68 metal?

I need to get the newer hood out of here, and want to sell or trade the grill for a really good white 68 grill. I have the pictured grill with the silver inserts and one with the black too. The one with the black has some damage, but is readily fixable.

Sorry the pics aren't better.

Tell me what you’d do!

Scott

You've got a great looking W200. Desert Turquoise is one of my favorite colors. :clap

How much you want for the grille????? I am interested for sure!!! And i have a 68 grille, but I am not sure what kind of shape it is in, so I will take a pic of it tomorrow, and let you see if you want to trade, or sell your old one, or maybe a combination of both!!!

Put the '68 stuff on a '68, the later stuff on a later truck. I like things to at least look original. Otherwise people who know what they're looking at will ask you if you have a '70 or '71. :2cents

But for the record, the '68 clip IMO looks better with desert turqoise.

As far as SWB D100's I like the clean lines of the 70-71 grill/hood. AS far as W-series goes, especially W-200, 1968 is by far the toughest and best look of any sweptline truck. The old quad light pre-65.5 looks too brickish, 66-67 looks too bug-eyed, 69 & later gettin kinda wimpy. 68 is it!

:thinking I'm trying to figure WTF is wrong with the '68 white grille in the pics. :pale
The '68 look is the way to go BUT I'm prejudiced since I have a '68 W200 AND a '68 D200 that I'm stealing parts from for the W. :Thumbsup

I like the Dude donor fenders.
I also like 69.5 to 71, but if it is a 68, leave it a 68, one year only deal.

Wow! I appreciate those taking the poll, all the comments, and of course all the pictures of trucks!. Like I said in my original post, I’d made my mind up that the W200 was keeping the 68 metal, but I was definitely curious as to what others thought.

I’m checking daily to see how the numbers look, and checking the comments, so this is not a dead post! Feel free to contribute as you like.

Waht a great site!

Thanks again to all,

Scott
