What will fit???
OK, got a 70 D100 a couple weeks ago, and I am getting ready to start wrenching on it, but need to know a few things.........
The original seat is gone. What will fit in it??? I have heard Dodge caravan seats (buckets) will work. Anyone try these before??? Also I found a 74 dodge van with low back buckets, I have seen a few posts on here saying not to use high backs in these trucks. Is that a personal preference, or do they just not fit right??? And does a bench seat from a later model Dodge truck fit????? Found a 85 with a seat in good shape, but dont know how the original mounts.
What carbs will fit on a stock 4 bbl intake??? Motor was said to be out of a St. Regis, but carb is gone. I saw 2 vans at pull a part with Quadrajets on them... WTF???? Is this factory???? Have not been messing with Mopars for awhile, but didnt they use Carter carbs???? Never saw a Quadrajet on one before, so this is puzzling. But it was on two different vans, so dont know.
Radiator is gone, so which one is best to use????? There were a ton of trucks with radiators, so I can find something I am sure.....
Thanks, I am sure I will have more dumb questions later!!!!!!

Name-less Person
I'll call this a remember what you read session.
As Robin ( Who is Robin??? ) has said several times; the cab width
is ______ inches.
As others have said several times; High Back seats do not have
enough room for the upper part of the seat in a standard size
cab. If you are above 5'6" and weigh more than 160 lbs ( or your
passengers ) other seats will not work correctly for all. You may
get the seat in the cab and the result will be like sitting in the
middle seat in a air line.
In 1972 the seat mounting frame had an new attaching design to the
cab floor.
With out the weight of the seat and bulk of the seat attached to the
frame you can remove the older designed brackets in the cab and
install the 1972 and newer design. When all is finished then re-attach
the bench seat to the frame.
Or
Do the above 1972 and newer frame to the 1970 cab and then attach
the low back buckets from the van to the full width frame.
=======================================================================
A personal preference would be the colour ( which has never been mentioned).
=======================================================================
The LA-318 has never had a factory made 4 bbl intake. Due to marketing
and the sales made off of this, the LA-360 Intake has been bolted to the
LA-318 engines. This has been to the LA-318 heads and the LA-360 heads
bolted to the block. Either way it is much like stuffing a 3/4 inch pipe to a
1/2 hole.
..............................MoPar Carb History ...................................
The 4 bbl carb was made by Carter. This ended.
The next company had the Thermo-Quad. This ended.
Then years later you happen to see the third try, Q-jet's.
All of this has been written about since this happened back when.
========================================================================
Measure the width of the Radiator Space and the mounting hole
information write it down. At the local pick & pull, check your notes
and with your tape measure look for an A/C equipted 1980's era NY'r
or like MoPar, to get the Radiator and the Fan Shroud.
=======================================================================
Also look for a 1975 and newer MoPar Engine that has the 18" diameter
Cooling Fan at the pick & pull. Get the Thermo Silicone Drive from NAPA
( # 271303 ) or the like Auto Parts Store.
=======================================================================
It is OK sharpen your pencile, ask question's and move to the front of the class.

you have 61" of room to work with
you can always drill a hole to put in a seat, you may get lucky and find one that bolts to a close to the old seat

Re: What will fit???
OK, dumb questions part II.... How do I find out if the motor I have is actually a 360, or a 318 without taking it apart?? Where on the block would the numbers be, and is there a number I am looking for??? Also, the truck was originally a 6cyl/4 speed (3speed + granny gear) but someone changed this to a 360/318, with the 904 tranny. If i go back to a manual, what tranny would be the best choice to put in this??? I am not using this to tow, more like a weekend cruiser. And will a bellhousing from a 6 bolt up to the v8??? If not, I already grabbed a bellhousing, flywheel and starter off of a 318. And is there a 5 speed that will bolt to this with no problems???? And ;ast question for this session, how do I get pics to load on here???? When I try to load then it says invalid image. So what am I doing wrong???? Thanks!!!

This I can't say, don't own a camera (besides webcam) so I've never tried to post a pic. The bottom forum here has lotsa threads regarding posting pics....To answer one of your original questions, yes Mopar did use quadrajets in the 80's...Used carter afb/avs in the 60's, thermoquad from 71 til 80ish, then Q-jet til going to injection. At least this is how it went down with 4 barrels.xCOYOTEx wrote:What size are they supposed to be????

Person
Here is a very easy way to know what you are looking at.
" ...A person who knows how to "spot" a LA-360 from the LA-273 - LA-318
or LA-340 will only look at the Harmonic Balancer from the driver's side
fender. For this "do not touch" way is to think, " if the unit appears
slightly less than one inch wide, it is the lower cubed family. If the
Harmonic Balancer appears about 1 1/4 inches wide, it is the LA-360.
You can use the older first series valve covers with no smog attachment
tabs and etc, but you can not get away from the Harmonic Balancer size
knowledge."

Re: What will fit???
You can look at the casting number on the driver's side of the block. It will be under the exhaust manifolds. You will have to get under the truck to read the numbers. It will clearly have the engine displacement and some other numbers.xCOYOTEx wrote:How do I find out if the motor I have is actually a 360, or a 318 without taking it apart?? If your images are not valid I would suspect they are the wrong format. When they are too large it will tell you they are too large. Are they saved as jpeg's? That is what you'll need unless you use a remote photo hosting site.

Re: What will fit???
Ok, got pics up. And thanks for all the help, and not making me feel like a total noob. Have been out of messing with cars for awhile. had a Jeep Cherokee that I was planning on 'wheeling, but found this truck and it grabbed my attention. Plus I have a friend with a good running 318 that he pulled out of his 67 'cuda project to make way for a 360 stroker. So with all that going for it, the Jeep went bye bye. So I am now getting parts together so hopefully I can drive it this summer. So I will be picking everyones brains for ideas, and hopefully wont annoy ya with too many stupid questions!!!! Thanks everyone!!!

I'm glad you have now posted some photos .
I too have never heard of "Naptown". Thanks, I liked that.
You may not like the thoughts of repairing and trying to find parts that are
no closer than 2300 miles away when you want them and 2 miles away
after the UPS Truck drives away.
When you get it back on the hwy's, you will have more attention than
with five Jeeps.
Who ever tried to use the side shifting transmission with a floor shift
unit should be found to repair their work.
Sooo, which engine do you have ???

Re: What will fit???
Well it appears the motor I have in the truck now is a......... 360!!!!! Score!!!! But not sure of how it runs, so for now the original plan of the 318 is still in play. But I may rebuild this one for whatever my next project is!!!! And someone asked if the 904 was mounted up, and yep, it is. Hooked to the factory crossmember, as far as I can tell. Will take pics at some point, when we get her in the lift. And can anyone tell me what tranny I can use in this thing if I go back to a stick??? I have a NP435, but I really do not want a granny gear, but I may use it anyway. Or I may use the 904. Have not decided just yet. But I would love to run a 5 speed, if I didnt have to change a buttload of stuff to make it fit. Thanks!!!!

Re: What will fit???
The 1970-71 trucks are setup to use any tranny, except the unusauble 435, which in todays world is unusuable and way over weight, you'll need to do research on 5 speeds, although their is a company on one of the post here than has a 5 speed that bolts to a small block, also if your out and about if you luck enough to find a Mopar car with a 4 speed small block you'll be able to use it. The car trans will do the same amount of "work" if you actually ever have a need to haul something, but now days who actually ever really hauls something everyday that would need something "heavy duty"? judging from your previous post I think your lookin for something to cruise and haul things that are way under 1000 lbs

Re: What will fit???
Yep, will be a cruiser more than anything. If I decide to use it as a hauler, I will still have the 435 if I dont wind up selling it to get parts I need/want. But I will keep my eyes open, and see what I can find. A 5 speed would be nice, but a 4 speed would work also. And I still have not ruled out the 904, I just would rather run the manual tranny. But will just have to see how it goes. If I run the 904, what would be the best shifter to put on it?? Was the floor any different between a stick ans auto tranny??? (aside from the big hole in the floor!!!!) Higher/lower/wider?????

Please let me address some of your question's one at a time. All of my
information is pure MoPar and will be the best "bang for the buck". No
"well I believe" or I heard my H.S. friend's second cuizin's brother say ...
========================================================================
Transmission:
Go back to find out what the original truck came with. This information
is on the Data Plate attached to driver's side of the door frame opening.
The answer is one of the following:
... #745 ( Three Speed ); they were all with the shifter as part of the
steering column The side shifting version of transmission was the same
for all engines used.
... New Process 435 ( 4 speed ); they had the standard ratio which
most of us have and the optional "quick ratio" which most of us do
not have and do not know about, but sure would like. Either version
shifted from the top center of the transmission. This transmission
was used by Dodge pick-up's until the end of the eighties ( 1987 ) in
any Dodge 100, 200, 300, 150, 250, 350 or Ram 1500-3500 series
Dodge Truck .
This same NP 435 transmission is also used in GM's, Inter-National's,
Ford's . The in-put shaft can be of a different lenght with different
sized bearings and the same for the out-put shaft, than what Dodge
used. The internal bearings and gears can be swapped from the other
user's to get a more city type driving usage.
All of these transmissions are hard "truck type" shifting transmissions.
If you are thinking of some personal vehicle to vehicle performance
testing, it is best to do so with another truck. The quicker shifting
cars can shift gears and be on their way while you are still trying to engage
the clutch . Your advantage is your transmission will never break.
===================================================================
A-904 Automatic's
This light duty car transmission was never used in any year or any way
with the dodge Truck or the Dodge Van.
Dodge did enhance it in the eighties to be used in the very light duty
only "want-ah-be" pick-up's . It is labled as the slightly better A-988 or
the much improved A-999 . The A-500 is the A-999 with a factory built
Over-drive attached to it ( the transmission housing has a full shape to
the rear ) .
The A-998/A-999 or A-500 will never fit a Slant Six or the 361-383-400
-413 or 440 enginees.
===================================================================
Newer Dodge Truck 5 Speed Manuals
The newer Dodge Truck 5 Speed Manual shifting transmissions are a top
center located shifter. The fith gear is the Over-Drive. It will bolt to your
"newer" LA-360 . They were first used in the Dakota's and Ram 1500's with
the 3.9L V6's.
Find out what the towing limit of a 1988 to 1998 V6 Dakota or Ram 1500
and you will soon see that it has more than enough "tomato sauce" to be
in your truck too.
When the 5.2L V8 was also placed in the Dakota's or Ram 1500's it was
still used as the standard used manual transmission.
When either engine went past the standard usage to HD, performance,
job duty or the like, they used the same transmision with a slightly larger
out-put shaft diameter.
This transmission will never fit a Slant Six or the other engines listed.
==================================================================
If you decide to do some changing of this or that, make sure you collect all
the needed parts before you start removing any part off your truck. Also
do this "exercise" on written paper first.
