440 Six Pack Hemi

I was watching the Barrett Jackson auction on the Speed Channel today and saw a '70 (or so) 'Cuda and it was listed as being a "440 Six Pack Hemi". It had "440+6" on the shaker scoop, and the big graphic on the quarters that said "440", so how can the car be a 440 and a Hemi? ......wonder how long it will be before we see a Sweptline on there?

I've heard that many times from people that don't know what they're talking about. A 440 has a wedge style chamber, the 426 hemi has a hemispherical style chamber. Dave

thats almost the same as when you ask someone what size cam they got? "I got a 3/4 Race cam!" :lol: :lol:

Does anyone make aftermarket hemi heads for a 440? I don't think original 426 hemi heads can be put onto a 440 block. I was interested in doing it and asked around and the answer I got was no. I guess with enough machine work anything's possible, but for all practicle purposes it won't work.

I don't know Russ, I was aproached by a couple of people in 1999, when I had it apart about putting Hemi heads on it, I told them if I wanted a Hemi I would have bought one. If anyone had what was needed I would suspect in would be ManciniRacing :Thumbsup

I saw that too! It was just a miss print though. They never mentioned Hemi anything when the car was on the block. Very nice car too! I was suprised cause there were several Chebby trucks on there. Someday there will be a Swepty.

You cant drop Hemi heads on a 440, Hemi heads would be flying off of the shelf if that was possible. However, there IS a place that will sell you a hemispherical type head for your Mopar. They can make them for small block or big block. But, they are SUPER expensive. Someone posted a link on a forum once and I saw them. Cool idea, but not worth the $$.

Mike Joy is a great NASCAR commentator, because he knows somethings about NASCAR.

Bob Varsha is a great F1 commentator because he knows something about F1.

BUT!

These guys and the others on the Barrett Jackson Auction telecasts are HORRIBLE because they know NOTHING about these...ESP MOPAR...and anyone who has half a brain's worth of knowledge about Classic/Muscle can catch a...to borrow from Chebby (Robin speaking :lol: ) Chase..PLETHERA of errors...

I must then come to the conclusion that they are making these sme errors when talking about makes/models that I am not familiar with.

The only reason they get away with it, is because...A-we cannot voice our disgust about the lack of factuality related to the discussion of these autos...B-most viewers do not know any better.

I remember the conversion that matt reffered to. The hemi has one more bolt per cylinder than the wedge. That bolt was just inside the lifter valley and the kit had you welding in a threaded sleeve there.

Hanson used to make a conversion package for the 440 block but since the rerelease of the hemi block they haven't been making any more of the conversion heads. Why do it when the 440 blocks are such a weak link.
The 426 hemi uses a stud that threads into the underside of each intake port. The stud slips into a sleeve thats cast into the block above the lifter valley. (I'm sorry if I'm not explaining this better). The top head bolt on a 440 is very close to the same location but is about 1/2 a hole off. Also, the Hemi has oil drainback holes in the outter lower corners of the block that funnel the drain oil from the heads back to the crankcase. If you removed the inner studs from the Hemi head leaving that blank, you could bolt the head to a 440 block. It wouldn't seal very well and you'd have to improvise a oil drainback system.
In the early 70's in Pro Stock the Hemi was being factored so heavily it was having trouble competing. A rule change favored smaller motors, a few enterprising souls did some welding and machining on 383 blocks. They ended up with a lowdeck bb Hemi. Everything had to be fabricated or altered to fit. They did run pretty hard though. Dave

I'd have to agree, as I posted, why put a Hemi head on a 440? I wouldn't build something like that, I like what the 440 offers, if the components are close its possible to see a 440 beat a 426, now don't read into what I typed the setups would have to be close :lol:

aah, Barrett Jackson, been there many times myself. You might think everyone involved is an expert. You would be wrong.
One of the guys (Rick DeBrill sp?) doing commentary for the Speed Channel/Barrett Jackson telecasts is a former Phoenix newscaster. They only read the information on the teleprompter and rehash what comes through the headset. It would be no different then having someone give a presentation on nuclear fusion and giving them the specifications for a Oster blender.
