My Latest Victim

Post by cudaboy »

Here's a RatRod that I just finished the interior in. I know, a ratrod probably shouldn't have an interior, but whatever the customer wants, right? I'd just call this a "refined rat", as it has AIR CONDITIONING, power brakes and power windows !! LOL. I had to build the seat from scratch because we couldn't find anything else low enough. The big rat trap in the trunk is there to cover up an ugly late model gas tank. The body is a 34 Hudson coupe.

Thanks. When the owner and I came up with the idea of doing the trap, I couldn't wait to do it. I wish I had a picture of what it looked like the first time i saw it. It was just a very rusted shell of a body sitting on a frame. They had to build almost all of the bottom third of the body and doors!
My Girlfriend earned some brownie points when she kept telling me how much she'd "love to have something like that to ride around in". :dance
So, I'm thinking that when I get to work on my sweptline, I'm gonna save some money and leave the faded original patina and concentrate on the mechanics. I could drive it like that for a while and then take it apart and polish it up later. Right now though, it pays more to work on everybody elses stuff. I'm sure plenty of you have the same problem. :banghead

Primer is not a color, it's a shortcut.

Doc, Not sure, but in the past, like 15 yrs ago, I didn't have much luck finding original vinyls for mopars. The GM ( generic motors) and some ford grains are still used. As for body cloth ( the original cloth patterns) , they are almost impossible to find, and if you did find some from a few companies advertised in Hemming's, They will be like NOS.... and priced likewise. Also, That cloth will be 40 + yrs old. I would'nt expect that to hold up very well.
With all that being said, there are many vinyls that have a "close enough" grain match that MOST people won't ever notice. Besides, Your truck being a Sweptline is unique enough on it's own that MOST people will never notice that it's not the 100 pt. original match..........But then again, there's always one or two in a crowd that can find something negative to say about anything! :banghead

What have I done that's better? Plenty! I've worked on show cars since I was 15. From T-buckets to corvettes, show winning cars. While that is not a "Rat-Rod", I still say primer is not a color, and rat-rods still suck. They are one step above the hill coasters we built as kids, made up of 2x4's and old lawnmower wheels. They are just a shortcut to be able to say "Hey, I've got a hot rod too". Also don't be coming on here and chastizing me about a post. Are you the board censor or something? What are we supposed to do, sit around the campfire and sing kumbyaa for everything that is posted? That's sort of like the liberal idea that that there are no failing grades in school, or no losers at the soccer game, we don't want to hurt their feelings and perhaps damage them for life, do we? If he posted it as a work in progress, that would be different, he didn't. I don't remember seeing in the site rules where only positive comments were allowed. If he can't handle a negative comment or two then he needs to not post off topic cars on the board. If the guy wants a positive comment from me then he needs to finish his car. Now back off.

Ok calm down, no i am not a censor. I apologize for "chastizing " you,i am just saying that you dont have to tell the guy his car sucks if you dont like it. Also the photo gallery is designed for pictures of "off topic" vehicles that people are also working on, and just about anything else that people want to post pictures of.

Now, I think that its cool that you have been working on show cars for that long, I am sure your knowledge will be very valuble for the others here that are attempting to make show trucks. I would like to see pics of some of the cars that you have done (as i am sure that others will too)

I have to weigh in on Facechicken's side on this one. Just because you don't like something doesn't give you the right to bad mouth it. I'm sure there are people that don't like some of my stuff but I built it for me and really don't care what they think of it. I personally hate trailer queens but I can admire the work that went in to building them. Not my thing but that's okay if that's what you like. And BTW, some rat rods suck and others are very cool, so it's not a one size fits all thing. At least be polite. Okay. I'm done so we'll move on now.  Mike

EVS1, I don't take any offense to your opinion. It is after all, your opinion. As for the HE shouldn't have posted a non sweptline car on here, I was just showing something that I was working on because it had something in common with sweptlines...it is DIFFERENT. As far as HE being the owner of the car (My customer and friend) cheating by not finishing it into a show car... This man owns about 5 different streetrods and custom trucks, but this is the one that he's having a blast with at the moment. When he takes it to local shows and cruise nights, people love it ! Especially kids and the general public that are not as into the car scene as the rest of us. My girlfriend for one, is STILL talking about that car, and it's been gone two weeks.
My view on the ratrod , is that it's a fad, or at least I hope it is!!! LOL The term ratrod is very vague and covers alot of different styles, which came about due to a rebellion against the high dollar billet laden streetrods that kept alot of folks priced out of the hobby. Besides, how many red 32 ford coupes do we need ? That's why I am a mopar man to begin with, I've already got a belly button and a butthole, I don't need a chevy too.

Ok, my earlier response was all spurred by me being told "Don't come on here hatin' ". I don't hate anybody's car. If the car is finished, why not put gloss paint on it rathar than flat? If it is a work in progress, why not say so? The guy has his lines correct, a good stance, wheel/tire combo works out nice, and a nice interior. Like I said, primer is not a color. As for rat-rods, the true SoCal ratrod, which that car isn't, my opinion hasn't changed. It doesn't have to have a candy apple paint job and twice it's weight in billet to be a custom. Actually I would hate to have to maintain a driver with all that crap on it.

Not every paint job has to be "gloss" finnish. My Dad's 61 has a flat black paint that's NOT a primer and it looks great.

PS rat rods were around WAY before the SOCAL scene made it popular.

By the way Cudaboy the interior looks great!

Thanks AZ. That Hudson is actually painted in a sealer type finish called "hotrod black", not primer, but same difference, niether is a finish coat, but this holds up better than primer. AAAAanyway, let's just move on to another subject. Thanks for looking, and thanks for all the kudos guys, MoPar To ya !!

Wow, this post took on a life of it's own. First off, the seat looks nice!!! The rat trap is an interesting solution to the problem!! Secondly, don't be hatin is a phrase, doesn't mean you hate or are hating.
