Machine shop prices

I've been looking around for a machine shop in my area (north of Seattle) that I like, is well recommended and 'correctly' priced. It has been a long time since I've had any work done at a shop and I feel like the prices I'm getting quoted are higher than they could be. Here are some examples of prices from a highly recommended shop:

I started shopping around for options two years ago when my 318 started to die. I worked in Everett (WA) at the time and found a place in Marysville, Automotive Machine, I think it was called. They quoted me at $4800 (worst case) to rebuild my motor. Yikes! I ended up buying a crate 318 from an out of business engine company in Tacoma for $800.

Ugh, thanks for the reply. I priced machine shops to do a hot tank, cam bearings, head work (clean, stems, grind). and it was more than a crate + shipping. I planned on doing disassembly and reassembly myself. I feel like I'm missing something.
