Re: Driveline Universal Joint Sizes
Are the axle u joints (inside the knuckle) the same 7260 joints for a 71 W200?

Re: Driveline Universal Joint Sizes
Its been a long time since I have replaced any axle u joints, but If I remember right they were Spicer. This is just a guess, but I would say 1330 or 1350 for the small knuckle, and 1480 for the large knuckle(crew). Maybe someone that knows for sure can answer that one better.surfnuke9 wrote:Are the axle u joints (inside the knuckle) the same 7260 joints for a 71 W200?

Re: Driveline Universal Joint Sizes
If you have the closed knuckles, I believe you're dealing with the tract-joints and not a u-joint. From what I've heard in the few discussions I've seen about them, replacements are hard to find, but they are reportedly quite strong.
Re: Driveline Universal Joint Sizes
Part #1843-143 is for a u-joint ["Cross"], front axle, W100/W200 [pre-'69]. another part #2298-823 for W200 only [pre-'69]. Cups/rollers are listed separately.

The tracta joints are W300 and flat fender stuff.deadendcustoms wrote:If you have the closed knuckles, I believe you're dealing with the tract-joints and not a u-joint. Aren't Tracta Joints where the farmers take their tractas
to be fixed?

Re: Driveline Universal Joint Sizes
ACTUALLY I read an article recently in a back issue of Vintage Truck or Power Wagon Advertiser about this topic.
The TRACTA (sp) Joint in ALL closed knuckles was EXTREMELY strong.
In the early 70's [I believe '74 or '75] when the FULL TIME units came out and the units with disc brakes the dealerships and garages were VERY happy since they could sell more parts and make more on labor.
The article said that since the joint was immersed in lubricant all the time {if properly maintained} they almost NEVER had to be replaced.
Hope this helps

This is eather misinformation ,or taken out of context. I am positive that the closed knuckle w100 and 200 dana 44 axles used standard universal joints.MOPAT wrote:

Some larger closed knuckle axles like the #5000 international front in the truck that Rob ,aka Powerwagon crazy just sold have a cv joint. This is an axle from the late 50's/early 60s!

Re: Driveline Universal Joint Sizes
No problem
I'm still trying to find a answer to surfnuke 9's answer my newest guess is 5-86x u join in the 3500lb axle and 5-260 x in the 3000lb but still not sure. I havent changed axle u joints for @ 18 years.

Re: Driveline Universal Joint Sizes
You're right, I was thinking of the Dana 70 front end when I spoke about the tracta joints. Dodge used the tracta joints in some of their 70 axles and a 5-88x in others. The Dana 44 closed knuckles got a 5-260x or 1310 (small) and a 5-297x or 1350 (large) as near as I can tell.

Newbie to this forum ... but not to online research.
Do have some experience restoring/upgrading a Slant 6/1972 Valiant - https://sites.google.com/site/lolathevaliant/
Have a pair of 1960 era 4X4 Power Wagons that I am refurbishing for "ranch" use - 1967 W200 short bed (up and running) and a 1968 W200 long bed (down to the chassis).
Want to go through the drive train u joints and replace them. Both appear to have larger shafts (have a couple donor trucks/4X4s from the era that that seem to have smaller shafts. Have found a couple older posts (including this one) about part numbers for the Yokes/u joints, but not having much success researching the part numbers/finding a source/verifying they are compatible.
Have a couple (am in Spokane,WA) good local driveline shops tell me a lot of the parts for larger shafts had support end in 1990's.
Wondering if there are still resources to get these?

Have you run this number by your local parts sources yet??
