Flat head six

Post by Hewy »

I assume that some of you have Power Wagons of other years besides 61-71. I'm very interested in the flat head six that was used in trucks both 2x and 4x
Where is a good start to get information on this engine. And is there sources for increasing performance ? :study

Call Vintage power wagons. They deal with that alot with the M37's and WM's.

Not goingto be much upgrade in a flat six other than ignition. I have seen a trick throttle body setup on a side manifold.

I meant to mention the limiting factor of the head design. I do alot of model A stuff and the head is similar. The only thing in a model A Ford four banger is ignition, carb, and bearing insert instead of babbot for increased RPM and reliable distance performance. We do put in V8 clutch and flywheel so parades dont kill your leg. These engines are low RPM high torque. The combustion chamber is limited to designed performance.

Beginning to hear that the main hop up is air related. More carbs and splitting the exhaust ignition.
I did find a guy here in town that shaved the head on his P15 to increase compression, and added an over drive sez he can cruise at about 75. Not anymore though, he got side swiped on the freeway and spun into a guard rail totaled his 46 Plymouth. The idiot that hit him kept on going. :pale
I am looking for anyone that makes an adapter to hook up a 727. There is a company that will do one for a GM 700r but I want to stay Mopar.

As you know the just after WWII American sold Dodge Car and light
duty Truck all had the 230 cubed (23") six. The Canadian sold Dodge
Car and Trucks soon begain having the 25" long six. Both engine's
had a single one barrled carb.

When you look at farm equipment, they offered a factory twin one
barrel carb on the 251 cubed "long" six.

Most twin carb'd after market units are for the short 230 cubed
engine.

After 1956 Dodge Cars in the U.S. started with a two barrel carb
on the 230 cubed "short" six.

With all this said, which engine do you have ???

Try this guy's website. Details the build of a 1950 Plymouth flathead six. Dual carbs, dual exhaust, aluminum head and much more.

As you have discovered the split exhaust, 2 barrels and dual singles are all available. but one huge thing is shaving the head. flatheads were all desgined to run on 70 octane fuel. they can handle more compression than they have stock. not real high like over head engines but they dont mind a shave of .075 on the head. And ALL flat head cams are WAAY too wimpy and also designed for 70 octane fule. changing to a lumpier cam and shaving the head will bring the preformance into the modern era expecially when coupled with a 2 barrel. but even with a one barrel the difference is quite pleasing. I have done this to quite a few 230s over the years. also balancing sometimes can help too. factory balance on Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth engines was pretty good though. I have balancing done anyway when they are apart.
