Carter BBD 2bbl woes?

I found my 2 barrel 2290 carb to be way out of adjustment from factory settings.
the power valve was set for High altitude. Plus, the pumper valve was set to shortest setting.
as my luck has it ! I installed the newly adjusted carb on truck...went to start it and my Rebuilt started failed!!!!!!!
so off came the starter last night. back to who rebuilt it today, (two Weeks ago)
i changes the Rocker cover gaskets a couple of weeks ago also...Napa's best Rubberized cork gaskets..they leak worse than Exon Valdez....
I'm thinking I will return this truck to the guy i bought it from....

Starter re- rebuilt . I need to do some logging this weekend . I sure hope the carb, rebuild works out OK..geez it's just a 2 barrel Carter...How hard can that be?
lol famous last words? I sure hope not.

WELL Guys and Gals out there in swept-land. I Got-R-Done..once gas hit the carb it took right off..I left it warm up a bit and Nailed the gas peddle and vroom vroom... runs great.
I still have to replace the front brake cylinders and fix some wiring issues ..but today I'm putting "REX" back to work pulling down trees.

I have not had such luck... I was still having the same problems... I also remembered that if my carb sits a day or so without being started it seems to drain out a bit. I always thought this was strange... I could never figure out where it went.
I tore it down again AFTER I rebuilt it and took a closer look, in the fuel bowl, at what I had previously thought was a casting ridge but now think is a crack through the bowl into the carb.
Maybe it's because of this that the bowl seems to drain and ALSO this crack creates an internal vacuum leak into the fuel bowl.
The crack is about 3/4" long and goes from the bottom corner of the bowl in the back, up the throat side.
This is the only thing I can figure...
Is it a bad idea to find another carter 2bbl bowl and mix/match my electric choke and good throttle plate to it?

OR is there something I can do to seal the bowl in the other carb? Brush it then solder? or is there something like JB weld that won't break down in gas?

Sigh... I however am VERY happy that your "Rex" is happy to get working again. lol That is great news!

Don't know if it's still available but there used to be an epoxy in a tube that contained metal particles. Both steel and aluminum if I remember correctly. I recall using it to seal a carb back in the day. Good luck. :salut :salut Mike

I used to work on the local carb rebuild guru's shop heater..no one knows where to find the guy now..
.I remember him telling me that a lot of good carbs were thrown away due to leaks. he used some sort of epoxy...look on line and see. they will tell you what they hold up too....my 85 chev 4 door truck does the same thing
as far as using bits and pieces from carb to carb. it will work if they are the same sizes.
you will have to file the screws down a bit ,that hold the butterfly valves to shaft to get them out. they are staked in..i would also put some sort of dowel to support shaft so you don't bend it. be careful not to mar inside of carb.

Mine is wonky too. Seriously considering a 4 bbl manifold and FE (332-428) Ford spec Holley 2bbl carb. Can't seem to locate worthwhile Carter 2bbls anymore. Latest one is for a 1974 318 with a manual trans. Good thing 727s work fine without a throttle linkage...

727s need a kickdown! That controls the line pressure, if you don't have it the line pressure will be too low and you can burn it up.

Pulled a heavy late 60s horse trailer cross country with it in April, no throttle linkage. Did fine. Only trans issue I've ever had is it leaks like crazy.
