CORRECT STEERING WHEEL?
CORRECT STEERING WHEEL?
I have owned this truck for 10 years, and never questioned the little stuff the previous owner did to it. BUT, I just realized -after being asleep for some time it seems - that my steering wheel looks like it is off a later model truck!!!! I have a 64 d300, with the deep, three arm, black steering wheel, with the bulbous steel base and the larger round shaft to the floor (also has a sheet metal plate which comes off the bottom of the dash). I think the correct steering wheel for this model has a shiny, small horn emblem in the middle, and a not so deep three arm pattern -I am confused. What is have is the deep plastic horn button. Can some one put my fears to rest? Do I have a late model 63? Didi they put these on the biger trucks vs the smaller trucks?

two types of stearing wheels came on your truck.
One black and having 2 spokes with red center
horn button (65 this horn button changed to
silver and differant pattern),
and one white with horn ring (custom cab option).
Anything with 3 spokes, black and black center
will be 69 and later.

The parts book says-
17" with horn button D 100, 200, 300
that would be the black wheel.
17" with horn ring D 100, 200
that would be the white wheel,
but I have seen the them in 300's
in custom cab optioned rigs (factory?
don't know, but the rest of the custom
cab options were there).
The other wheels listed that would
of been 3 spoke would have been 18"
or larger (18", 20" 22") and they would
have been on trucks larger than D300.
There is a 18" listed for the W300 (and
oddly, W100 gets 18" but no listing for
the W200??).....
So there is is, guess what you need to
do is take a tape and get a size......

would it be really be easy to swap these things out -meaning specifically - would the previous owner have had to do major modifications to the firewall as well as other things? I am happy with the steering wheel I have, but I went this far, why stop now.....
I called wild cat wreckers for the column and the wheel, and a local place turner's auto wrecking, and see that there is a nos wheel on ebay for 200.00 - what should I expect to pay for the full monty, and again, will this be an easy swap? all in all?
I really appreciate the help.
BTW The image posted are of later model trucks, right? because of the pie tin front lights -I have the four lights because two is not enough here in Oakland!

my description of deep was relating to the early wheel's arm angle off of the center, in which the later truck's steering wheel have a "deeper" , pitched abgle. The image you posted is not the same as what I have, but looks really spectacular -rare?
also, I have a metal intermediate plate, which is bolted to the dash, then a U bolt holds the column to that plate. Strange, but I can't seem to find any references to this set up anywhere I have looked, and I do have a fair amount of research material. I will try and post a pick Monday.

I believe its standard for 300 series & up, if you'rewally wrote:I found something out here... the steel plate that mounts off of my dash is for a d400 and above, not standard on most d300 -I may be wrong, but it looks that way.
talking about the piece that mounts between the dash
and the column.

I thought that there was a difference in size between a Power Wagon steering wheel and a 2 wheel drive. The steering wheels on our '62 W100 (red horn button), '64 W200 (black horn button), and '64 W300 (black horn button) are all 18" diameter. We also have a steering wheel from a '65 D300 (black horn button) and it is the same as the other steering wheels. All the steering wheels look like the one in DigDoug's post above. I am thinking that D100 and D200 had the 17" diameter steering wheel while the W series and the D300 and up have the 18" wheel. The red horn buttons may have been only for the 100 series trucks and the black horn buttons are for 200s and up. A friend of ours has a '64 W100 also with a red horn button. Hard to tell.
