Corrected 1970 Wiring Diagram
UPDATE: I later learned that this isn't a factory wiring diagram.
The 1970 wiring diagram has errors.
I went through it with a spare dash harness and meter in hand and found several errors. These are things that when traced through do not add up, in comparing to an original harness the problems start making since.
The first item was in the hazard/brake/left turn lights
As drawn the front left turn light would come on with the brakes.
Next was at the light switch connector.
Not sure the impact of the error but the harness I had has the park lights connected in with the taillights.
Next was the swap of high beam and park lights on the forward lamp harness.
Obviously this isn’t correct (doesn’t agree with the dash harness in the drawing)
Last was actually the first one I discovered but didn’t see the error till later.
The black from the alternator is shown with the taillights, can we say full time tail lights and no charging unless the lights were on.
This link is the original drawing with notes of the errors.

Re: Corrected 1970 Wiring Diagram
Your drawings are a great reference tool. Thanks for taking the time to put it all together. Attached is a wiring diagram from my 70 shop manual showing the A.C. wiring. Maybe you could add these to your files. The wire colors are from my harness.

Re: Corrected 1970 Wiring Diagram
I see that on the top it says this is only for 1/2 and 3/4 ton. What would be the reasoning behind it not being for a 1 ton? I don't understand what would be that different to the 1 ton trucks, if anyone knows or has any info I would appreciate it. I am also looking for a wiring diagram for a 71 D300 truck.
Thanks
Jeff

You should post this in the "TECHNICAL WRITE-UP" section. Good job.

Re: Corrected 1970 Wiring Diagram
After going through this I do not see Dodge having a different diagram for the other D/W series trucks, also I do not see that there should be anything different with the 71.JeffTheMarine wrote:I see that on the top it says this is only for 1/2 and 3/4 ton. If you use this as a guide and just follow the component diagrams you should be able to track down your problems.

Luckily the 71 diagram has been spot on so far. However, I appreciate you intuitive input and chasing problems. We have to chase down these things, the more I look at my diagram, the more I understand it, and the more intuitive it seems- I just keep trying, it is frustrating, but I'm still going!

Re: Corrected 1970 Wiring Diagram
Jeff, the 300 and up series trucks had a lot of auxillary lighting and equipment that was not standard equipment in the 100 & 200 series, so they are different.JeffTheMarine wrote: ↑Mon Jan 23, 2012 1:45 pmI see that on the top it says this is only for 1/2 and 3/4 ton. Not to knock the work Alan did on these diagrams, but they are not factory diagrams, thus the mistakes or errors he found. The FSM does not have the mistakes he has pointed out and the FSM has a lot more details than what he is working with. The FSM shows, the wire designation, AWG and color, so you can follow the conductor/wire by it's designation and wire size, not just by color as you have to with his.

Re: Corrected 1970 Wiring Diagram
I have the 1969-1971 Dodge Trucks Service Manual & Supplement too, that I purchased through Bishko Automotive Literature. In this reprint publication, I find minor errors, and was told they are intentional for copy right reasons, ect. .

Re: Corrected 1970 Wiring Diagram
Hmmm .... then what's the point of buying the manual? Sounds like a cop out message. Hard for me to believe that it's printed in error for copyright infringements.
Re: Corrected 1970 Wiring Diagram
So far, what I found was that the conductor insulator color is labeled BN when reviewing the rear lighting diagram in the Specifications chapter on page 27, wiring diagram for the D100, D200, W100, and W200. The color legend in the top right corner of the page is printed BR for brown insulator color. So in asking around why this might be, was the answer given to me that has you confused. The manual has been a great help to me thus far!

Re: Corrected 1970 Wiring Diagram
I just looked and that's exactly how it is printed in my original FSM. There are many "typos" like that, and other errors in the originals. I have never found a discrepancy between an original FSM and a bishko reprint. That "copyright" statement sounds like BS to me.
As an aside, I ordered an original FSM for my 70 W200 at the local Dodge dealership in 1978. It was $50 then! Bishko reprints in today's money are cheap!

Re: Corrected 1970 Wiring Diagram
The factory service manuals probably don't have any copyrights. I know the parts books do not.
Re: Corrected 1970 Wiring Diagram
Just came across this after chasing down my turn signal brake light issues. Man I wish I got ahold of these earlier…. I’m printing them out for future use. I have a 71’ and they appear to be the same…
