920 cylinder heads?

Post by naloleal »

I have a 67 318 engine. While discussing doing a swap to 302 heads, someone informed me that my engine came with 920 heads that, with a little bit of work, could perform just as well. Anyone have any input? And if so, what type of work are we talking about here?

I wouldnt waste the time unless you are upgrading to a 4bbl, cam, headers etc. The heads you have are stock 273/318 with same valve size as the 302. The 302 woulkd give a little more flow and compression stockconfiguration and more with porting and bigger valves.

The switch to 318 Magnum heads is even better than the 302 head swap. This depends however on what (if any) porting you have planned as the 302 heads can be made to perform well. The Magnum heads do require a few other parts changes and that can add-up. I have done the swap and the Magnums work and perform well.

The 302 casting heads are said to be prone to cracks. The Indy X magmun head uses stock valve train and the EQ heads use the newer individual rockers. Both Indy and EQ flow more out of the box than any stock head with mild work. Both have the small CC combustion chamber. None have the velocity of the 318 head. 318 heads are surprising when you install 160 exhaust valve in them. It allows the exhaust to keep up. Cost is the major issue. Lots of articles and comparisons online. Take advantage of them.
