question for the cummins swap guys

i saw this truck on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1967-Dod ... 19d712d803 my question is i know most people when they do this swap they notch the fire wall but who ever did this conversion appears to have not needed to and it also looks like they are using the factory radiator support do you have to notch the firewall for the intercooler?

the reason im asking is because i plan on doing this swap to my 70

No. A few members have done this by not using the cooling fan. That's a neat truck but those motors need an intercooler.

Yep, use of the standard air-air intercooler requires notching of the firewall unless the radiator is moved to the bed like I've seen in some off road rigs.
I've also heard of water-air intercooler (opposite of a radiator) that can be mounted on the side of the engine compartment. This might be able to work but you will need a pretty good size intercooler for the cummins.

I have always imagined getting a custom intercooler made to fit behind the grill...... But I think I will go big block and CNG on my next one. 1.60 per gallon and way lower maintenance costs than diesel. you us twice as much fuel but still only ads u to 3.20 equivalent to diesel cost per gallon...... still dreaming though.

I only had to notch the rad support to get the ac condensor in there, and my firewall is 100 percent in tact.

Oh, and I hvae one cummins with a intercooler, and one without, and I cant tell the difference when driving them. So to say you need them, Im not sold on that. I also have a 94 cummins and it has a bigger intercooler, but I think the 93 is the best one.
Now the 05 cummins Im fixing, it has a huge intercooler, but it also has a dual turbo setup on it. That one would probably benefit the most by having the intercooler.

I also took the mechanical fan off of my transplanted 93 engine, and it has never gotten hotter than 180. I do have a small 8 inch electric fan on, but I have yet to turn it on.

have you ever pulled any weight on long grades ?

Not much for long grades around here, but I have pulled 24,000+ a time or two, but its pretty flat around here, most pulling I do is 80 mph and the whole truck and trailer is at 10,000.

Yah my 81 doesn't have an intercooler either. I haven't pulled any crazy loads, but I have pulled what I do have pretty hard up some steep grades. It will jump up to 1200 degrees pretty quick. It comes down as quickly as you get off the throttle. I just turned the pump up on it, so it will be interesting to see how it does in the future. As far as the fan goes I would definitely run one. I didn' t have a fan on my for a while (mechanical or electric). I ended up exploding my torque converter. Was it coincedence or just 300,000 mile mark I don't know. You have to consider if you are driving alot in town with stop and go traffic that the transmission cooler also needs some sort of airflow. I now have a tranny temp guage on there to get tabs of it. It would have been interesting to see if there was a difference in trans temperature without the fan..
