Rusty cap mounts? Maybe i can help...

Post by Gjdodge »

So i've been getting everything figured out to start fabing them up and would like some thoughts/concerns.
Here is what i've came up with for my truck and ill make them close to these.
DSC01503.JPG
DSC01506.JPG
Their 12 Gauge (1/16"-3/32" thick) plate with the dimple pressed into them,
What i would like to know is the overall size that would work for most of you, if i need to do the bends, how much you guys would think is fair?

Thanks,
Rich.

I would be very interested. Maybe in 18" sqaured pieces? offset with the same distance that you have against the cab wall.

Not sure about price. Maybe $15-20 a piece?

You're almost going to have to make them tuck under the lip of the step, so that the stock spot welds can be drilled out...a lot of trucks are going to be rusted all along that seam at the edge of the floors...and a larger panel would help a lot, too...oh, and 12 gauge is overkill since the stock floors were only 16 or 18 gauge...

:goodpost To elaborate.....
I would think that 18ga [or 20ga :thinking ] would be good.
The distance between the bolt hole to the kick panel and
step area should be taken into account. Whatever the farthest
distance is, I'd suggest adding [up to....] another 2" to give
folks a bit of a fudge factor [I know I'd need it  ]. Your
idea is great and the offer to knock some out is very much
appreciated. I'm sure others who have fabricating experience
will chime in with their :2cents :Thumbsup

I didn't mean to sound ungrateful, sorry if I came off that way...if I hadn't already started building my own patches for this spot I'd buy a set of these...two key things would be making the bolt hole oversize or slotted to allow for body placement and if you could add the 90 degree lip that is spot welded to the side kick panel where your piece bends up into the toe boards it'd be a huge help for folks replacing that whole edge...a lot of these spot welded panels are rotten all the way between the two sandwiched pieces of sheetmetal and really should be fully replaced...and I wouldn't go any thinner than 18 gauge, anything less than that like 20 or 22 is getting a bit wimpy for a mount area...thanks for going through the trouble of making the patches, and best of luck to you...

It seems that everyone is going to want a different sized piece of metal. Every floor is going to have a different amount of rust. The divot is the part that most won't make on their own so that is the most important part. Pehaps those who want this item will have to weld the divot into their own piece of metal that they fabricated.

Thank you guys for the input. My only concern is if I go to far to the rear I dont hve a way to make the bead. I used 12 gauge cause I figured it would be better for replacing the two layers. But if 18 ga would work thats fine, it will be better to form ask well.

Rich,
If you were to make a simple square or rectangular
piece with the dimple and hole with enough metal
to the kick panel side for bending down to meet
the step well and bending up to meet the kick panel
I think that would be sufficient. I'm thinking that
it isn't a bad idea to have this "extra" metal there.
If you don't need it.... you could just trim it off.
If the piece were rectangular, you could spin the
piece 90 degrees to utilize a "long" or "short" side
depending on where you need the most new metal
to be. :2cents I'm sure others will have some good
input as well. I think it would be best for you to offer
whatever the "final" panel would be in flat form to
save you trying to pre-bend or pre-form anything
more than that dimple. For that matter, you could
even not drill the hole and let the installer do that
on their own. :thinking :2cents Lots to consider....

Ok here is what im thinking. 12"X 18" 16gauge just for a little added strength with the dimple pressed in the middle? And looking at $50 a pair.

Thicker is always better than the same or thin.
