Truck won't start after trying to set timing - Pertronix thr

Post by gwilson09 »

Hello all,

I am installing an Ignitor in the truck and am unsure of which side of the ballast resistor is the ignition side and which is the coil side. One side has a single red wire and the other side has both a red and an orange wire. Also, where do I splice the Ignitor wire in? All pertinent replies greatly appreciated.

First thing you need to determine is which side is powered by the key. Get you a test light, unplug both sides from the resistor and then test your connection by turning the ignition switch to run.

Do you have the pertronix instructions?

I'll have to look at my Pertronix diagram but i think you wire it up like points and ground one side to the coil.

With that setup ,If its the igniter2,just use your stock wireing to the coil and splice all the wires from the ballast resistor together. You wont need the resistor anymore.

DigDoug brings up a good point... what sort of Pertronix do you have?

i have the "Ignitor" for my 440 that replaces the dual points in the stock style distributor that came on the 426 Street Wedge.

the instructions for this models says to not bypass the ballast resistor if the vehicle came equipped with one.

for mine it states the wire from the ignition switch to the ballast resistor is the same wire that also goes to the red wire on the Ignitor. the other side of the ballast resistor is what connects to the positive side of the coil. the negative side of the coil is where the black wire from the Ignitor is hooked up.

i hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. I got the wiring figured out and got the truck started. Seems like a whole different machine. Only problem is it was pinging pretty good under mid to high load. I was in the process of setting the timing (my first attempt at this EVER) and now I am unable to get the truck to start back up. Battery died really quick. I'm assuming that trying to start the truck when the timing is not set uses more juice?

Put No# piston to top dead center. remove spark plug wire # 1& spark plug hold near engine block and with key on,on turn the distributor till you set a spark from #1 spark plug. This is how an old timer told me he set the timing. You could try it.I personaly have done it different.#1 at TDC and turning the distributor until the poins were open and that worked for me.Good luck.
