Wiring Alternator
I have changed my 1969 Dodge D-100 over to Electronic Ignition and to the new electronic regulator but I am having trouble wiring it. Can someone give me some ideas or help?

Are we talking about a 2 field wires and one to battery?
Or old points type with a replacement ER unit?
If 2 field wire..... Old field wire (green) is still used, brown wire is added to system if using a stock
plug for the ER unit, Holding ER unit
so that the plug in is at the point and flat side to bottem, slice the top wire with old Ing wire from key
and new wire to alt.
Green wire goes to other post on regulator.
You must have a alt with 2 field wire pulgs on it
for this to work.
The points type ER replacement type will just take the
stock wires and no alt. upgrade is needed.
EI unit is this for 2 post ballast type
and 4 pin EI box:
black with yellow strip, to neg side of coil
light blue to keyed side of ballast (key "on" will be hot)
wires with plug-ins to dist
Green wire is not used unless you have a 4 post ballast and 5 pin IE box
If you have above: it's all the same as above, just the black wire to one post of the ballast and
green to the post next to it on the same side of ballast, with keyed side of ballast
jumped "post to post" on one side of ballast to give power to both ballast's ( one side of ballast= set of post close to one anouther)

It seems to be charging some but not the way it should. It is staying at about 12.1 to 12.3 but when I turn my headlights on it drops to 11.6 but it won't bring the system up.

Re: Wiring Alternator
How does it respond to a slight increase in idle speed? Does it come up to nearly 13V?6973dodgecam wrote: It seems to be charging some but not the way it should. It is staying at about 12.1 to 12.3 but when I turn my headlights on it drops to 11.6 but it won't bring the system up.

No it doesn't even get close to the 13V.

go to this site for a color wiring diagram. http:www.4secondsflat.com then click on tech section, and then click on 4pin2pin conversion ozzie.

I have tried many different ways of connecting this, but all I get is 12.1v at idle. If I accelarate all it does is maybe 12.12v. When I turn the key to the run position there are two hot wires and then there is the ignition 2. One of the hot wires was the one that was connected to the ignition on the old regulator. The other is the one that is hot all the time.

Is the old regulator wire from ing. spliced to the
wire at the peak on the new reg (peak=one that points to center of reg.) and also runs to one of the field post on the alt? if using a stock plug this field wire should be brown. Old regulator wire from ing.
is the one to use and will be key switched.
Has to be wired this way or will not work.
Other wire (old green wire) will go to the other post
on reg (one to the outside edge reg) and the other end of field wire to 2nd field post on alt.
If ether of these wires or posts on the alt. are in contact with alt. case this will cause a short in system.
Also check plug on reg., sometimes they do not make good contact to reg posts.
Now if you are using old wires, with key on, test to see if
you are getting voltage at the wire that is spliced,
both ends (i.e. at alt field post and regulator post),
if not then you have a bad wire or splice; should also have 12v at other field wire (both ends if key is on). I recommend
that you solider your wires and not use quickconnects.
If everthing tests right and you still do not get charging, come back and we'll go the next step.

What exactly do you mean by the old regulator wire from ingnition is the one to use and will be the key switched? The wire that was on the old regulator to the ign. side is black. On the resistor it was a red or orange wire on one side of the resistor and on the other side there was a pink(ign 2) and + coil on the opposite side. Now I have the orange wire with the light blue (yellow tracer) from the ecu to the bottom of the resistor. On the other side of the resistor I have the pink(ign 2) and + coil.
