Power Brake Booster

Post by jimmy »

My brake pedal is not returning properly, In warm weather it seems to work better, but with the weather in the 20's and 30's the pedal doesn't want to return unless I use my foot to lift.

I have 92' axles, Dana 60 front and 70 Rear.
92 'Master cylinder
69' booster.

I can hear a very slight hiss when I shut the truck off and put my head under the hood for about 2 seconds.
I can also hear a slight RPM change when my foot is on the pedal.

Will a 92' booster work? Are the bolt patterns ion the fire wall the same?

Jimmy, when you talk of temperature it makes me think you have some grease giving restriction. Before you tear into it you might try in unhooking the brake pedal and see it it moves freely in the cold.

Also water is magnetized to brake fluid. Maybe you need to flush the system with fresh fluid in case it's trying to freeze up.

Mike,
Brake pedal moves freely, and All brakelines are new. Fluid is only a few months old.

A 92 booster can be used, but it will probably hit the firewall. So it will need shimmed out slightly.
It will also require a new set of holes to be drilled in the firewall, but that is pretty easy to do.

Thanks, Is thier a booster that will fit with out drilling? Do you think this is my problem? The weather warmed up in to the 50's, before the truck was warmed up the brake pedal was not working properly, once warmed up everything worked better.

My limited experance with boosters is when they are bad, is that they don't work at all.

Thanks
Jimmy

I think only a pre 72 will work without drilling. All the Lifestyle boosters I have seen had a larger pattern.

Sounds like there could be some moisture in there, but can't say for sure. The only booster I ever
had a problem with was the one on my 71, and the master filled it full of fluid!

Sounds like I'd better have mine rebuilt or plan on drilling holes.

Thanks.

I've been having a similar problem with the brakes on my 70' D200 camper special. My brakes were working fine, then one day i noticed that the level in the master was low, so i filled it. But shortly after that the brakes were hard to stop (like the booster wasn't helping at all) and it makes a hissing sound when i apply the brake. I checked the vacume line, but it seems ok. Any ideas?

If the fluid level dropped and the peddle didn't, pay close attention to the fluid level and the floor!

My 71 started loosing fluid and I couldn't figure out why, till my wife noticed fluid dripping
on the floor while she was helping my bleed the brakes. The seal on the master went and fluid
was pumping into the booster! The booster eventually filled and began to leak into the cab!

I don't know if you have someone closer and I have not used this company, but I understand they are very good.

I sent the booster and M/C from my 71 as a unit to "priorreman.com" in Gaylord Texas, the price was acceptable, and I was very happy with the job.

ratrodguy, sorry I didn't see your post my one year old $1000.00 laptop fried a mother board :banghead :banghead :banghead .

Everyone else, thanks for covering! :Thumbsup :salut

The privious advice is great. My brake pedal just doesn't return when its cold around freezing. Once the truck and or the ambiant temp. warms up they work great. I've been driving it anyway. I just use my foot to lift the pedal back up. I need an intire rear brake job, I used axles from a logger truck, the front was in good shape.

I haven't had the chance to drive it in snow or ice yet, however I'll be very careful and may rebuild the brakes earlier.

I installed new parking brake cables and found the rear brakes are less than I care for. I'm collecting parts for rebuilding them.

Something about this time of year and buying auto parts doen't sit well with my misses!

I put a diplomat stub under a 70 I have, I also used the power brake booster out of the diplomat too, bolted right on, just had to slightly bend the lip up a bit on the cowl, but you can hardly notice.

yes the 92' Dana 60 is disc. I believe most of my problem is coming from the rear. They need to be rebuilt. I will take care of it in the spring.

Today the temp is way above freezing and the brakes work great.

I know their is Zero moisture in the lines.
