Re: IFS versus stock...
Yes, yes... it has been discussed many times how effective the solid front axle is. I absolutely agree about the simplicity and ruggedness of the stock setup. I also agree that is one reason why OTR trucks still use it. The bigger factor, though, is the tremendous load capability of the straight axle... in the trucking world it's all about how much you can move on a dime. For those owners adventurous enough, the IFS is a practical solution to the modern roadways and traffic situations. Upgraded brakes and handling is a must when everyday cruising speeds average above 60mph. Those same adventurous folks might be more inclined to use their trucks for more than redundant work-a-day tasks.

Re: IFS versus stock...
The drawback about new trucks, at least for me, is all the complicated unnecessary electronics, sensors and solenoids and crap that comes with the IFSGeorge wrote:If I wanted Ifs I would get a newer truck.

There isn't one area that I can't comfortably tackle the diagnosis and repair of on the old Dodge.
Can't say that about a new electric truck.
Take the old Dodge, make a few creature comfort modifications and you have the good parts of new without the electrics

I just installed a 77 D-200 frame clip on my 64 D-200 Crew Cab. I also replaced the 3/4 ton springs with 1/2 ton springs. I got to get the cab back on it but it sits nice and low, which is what I want. Cant wait to get it back on the road and drive it!

I'm currently installing a Crown Vic IFS into my 1969 Fargo 100 Sweptline. I'll be posting a thread here soonly about the entire process, and how it can be done.

Re: IFS versus stock...
IFS is for the car ride on a truck really??I can take my Dodge on a on or off ramp and go around it at over 50 mph and never squeal the front wheels. It also wears the tires even this is on my 1970 using 275/60/15 tires.Another nice thing if you have to pull the oil pan theres all the room in the world to drop it.The KISS theory keep it simple stupid !!!!

Re: IFS versus stock...
we all have our own ideas, needs and wants. thats all there is to it. one day clunker bill will wake up again and your carburater will be out lawed and so will out dated suspension. or you license plates will be so use restricted that you will only be able to pull your classic up and down on the trailer, and nothing else. installing modern power plants, better brakes and up dated suspensions could help avoid this and make it a better and safer vehicle. i like the idea of the independent front suspension
