Re: Is a 440 out of a burned RV worth anything?
Friend of mine that's owned an auto shop for years said there's a Dodge 413 low-end torque engine they put in RVs that's junk. Anyone know of this?
Can someone give me a quick version of the diff between RB and BB?
Thanks again for the help guys. I'm gonna go get the forklift and pull the front half of the RV into the shop, blast the charred remains off the engine, and look for some ID. I pulled the dipstick, nothing on it, but loosened the oil filter and black gold came out. One good sign.

Re: Is a 413 out of a burned RV worth anything?
Well, I'd like to a lowbuck slambang with this thing...take the engine out of the motorhome, check it out, if it's good enough to run, drop it in the truck and burn rubber. Problem is, everything is burned off the engine. Prolly nickel and dime me to death, and who knows if it's any good inside. Plus it's a mhome 413, so it's not real desirable and maybe hard to get some parts for. The thing to do would be to use the block and rebuild with performance heads, etc., but I have no $ for that. Maybe I should just yank it out and save it for someday when I might. Or just take it to the JY in the mhome. Scrap metal prices are high.

David
If the RV version of the 413-3 was so much junk, they would not be doing what they where tasked to do. Take that non-aerodymanic motor home out on the freeway ( maybe pull another vehicle behind it ) and drive like mad to the Grand Canyon or the like.
If you want to know more on this engine, just email me ( there is an email icon under my name on the right side of every post ).

I'd take one in a heartbeat, but if it needs to be bored you may want to check for pistons I've been told that they are hard to come by but that said I'd still take one
Good luck with it.
Good luck with it.

Grab it
They stress relieve engine by heating them to @800 degrees and slow-cooling them. If they didn't turn a firehose on this and crack the block it should still be good. Warpage might be a problem though so if you rebuild have it bored, align bored and surfaced.

Hey There,
If the motor will still turn I'd pull the intake and clean out the leftovers and maybe the valve covers and if it looks ok dump some fresh oil in it then go for start. The 413 is an amazingly tough motor all that should need replacing will be gaskets and seals as motorhomes get no mileage on them. You'd be hard pressed to find a more dependable workhorse than the 413.
TTYL,
Bruce

Re: Is a 413 out of a burned RV worth anything?
ChiZler B/RB's run hot anyhow. All you have to do is say "start" and the manifolds glow orange. They're notorious for carbonizing spark plug wires and burning out valve cover gaskets. Grab it. The MH engines are sometimes different, sometimes not. The obvious difference will be a high-mount water pump that needs to be replaced for regular car and truck use. Other differences are lower compression, longer exhaust manifolds. heat shielding and sometimes cams. If it came out of a van-type MH it should be about the same as the car engine that year. Good luck finding a bellhousing for a stick conversion.
