Need Some Guidance - Slant 6 Related
Hello all. I have a truck in the barn that had a 318 in it, but I was considering putting a slant 6 in it that came out of a late sixties swepty. I am not certain what year the frame is, but based on the bed on it, I would guess it is mid-to-late 70s. Before you ask, the 318 is completely apart, and would take a lot of time, effort, and moulah to get to a point where I could put it back in. I know the slant 6 ran fine previously.
I hoisted the engine over the bay, and the current configuration apparently will not work, based on the placement of the crossmember and the oil pan on the slant 6. I believe the slant 6 engines were used in the Dodge trucks up to 87, so I would think there shouldn't be too much of a difference. But would you be able to tell me what needs to change to be able to make it fit without fabrication? Were the oil pans a different configuration on mid seventies trucks or is there a different crossmember on slant 6 trucks?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Jim

First you will need a rear sump oil pan then probably different slant 6 motor mounts for the newer frame.

I'm betting the latter may have to be fabricated for that frame. I have no idea how one would align everything to figure that out.

You will need 72 to 86 Slant 6 engine brackets and panfor a pickup.
My truck is younger than me.

What's the story on the transmission? Does the six even have a transmission? If it's a manual is it the 61-68 hydraulic clutch or the 69-up mechanical clutch?

I have the manual transmission from the pickup it came out of. Missing the transfer case though. Will need to find another one of those if I can figure this out.
I would guess it is the 68 clutch, since that is the year of the truck it was out of.
If you have thoughts on where I can find the engine brackets/mounts and pan, let me know. I will do some searching and see what I can find.
Thanks to all who replied so far. Much appreciated.

The frame pictures you posted look to be 78 and newer due to steering box in pics.Brudog wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 11:51 amI have the manual transmission from the pickup it came out of. Missing the transfer case though. Will need to find another one of those if I can figure this out.

68 And older bellhousing/transmission is not the way to go in your case. Just not really an optimal choice.
My recommendation is to find and buy a basket case 4x4 truck 78 or newer (80 up would be best) to use as a doner.
I am basing this due to very limited information on what you have in your parts collection for project.
My truck is younger than me.

Re: Need Some Guidance - Slant 6 Related
Maybe it is best that I just scrap the idea, and get something else to tinker with. Just figured since I had the parts and the parts truck sitting around, that I could make something out of it. But not wanting to get a parts truck to fix up my parts truck. Well if anyone needs a slant 6 out of a 68...
I do have some things that I can probably post on the site for selling, like hoods, tailgates, dashes, etc.
Thanks again for the responses.

What all is missing from the truck besides the disassembled 318?

Yes, great question!
Reading from the beginning, all that is mentioned is a frame with a bed of unknown vintage. No cab or front clip mentioned at all, nor is any seen in the pics. All the chatter has been about putting a /6 on a bare frame.....

It has the cab of a 68 on it. Since it was not a running / driving truck, I am not completely sure what is missing.
What I know I would need:
windshield, wiring harness, transfer case, and some rust repair (cab mounts on the front floor boards, drip rail above windshield). Would also replace engine components if I used the 318, like alternator, etc. And need new tires.
Have disassembled 318, trans, fuel tank, radiators, exhaust, hood, bed, tailgate, heater box, cables for heater controls, vents, brake booster, etc.

Great photo. The wheels and tires are a trip, straight out of Mad Max meets Hot Wheels.
Welcome to the forum! Although the software is a bit klunky, the search engine here is very good.
