Heater cores the same w/wo AC and removal

1970 D200 with 383. I'm getting my ac working again and for some reason the heater core decides to leak. I also have a hickory nut in the blower cage. Now I have to pull this stuff apart. I have the FSM but, it doesn't seem much help in this area.

Is the entire unit going to have to be removed?

Are the AC vs non AC heater cores the same?

Thanks Craig

I will venture to guess that removing the entire thing will be the best route, maybe only way. I have worked on older heater only set-ups & both types from late 70's, which aren't the same as yours.

I can't say to as whether the cores themselves are the same (A/C vs non-A/C).

I have a good core from a 65 truck that was non-A/C that I'd be willing to sell cheap if it would work for you.

I pulled my 71 mostly apart to remove years of oak leaves. It was pretty easy, a lot came apart from underneath. The blower is super simple, getting the nut out should be a 20 min job. Removing the glove compartment will help with access. Sorry that I don't know if the heater core is the same between ac and non.

I was hopeful that someone would tell me how to remove the core from an ac truck. The FSM doesn't.

I've got exactly the same thing happening with my 1969 383 D200, I've got the AC going pretty good and now the heater core started dripping so I have bypassed the heater for now but need to get at the core and get it working. I have the FSM and you are right not too much there about the interior removal. Did you have any luck with yours?

Nope. Leaking really bad now. Truck is parked but, I'm going to get into this week if I don't have a lot of OT at work. I've read about taking dash out but not sure about that. I hate to open the ac again.

My 70 D200 with factory air has different heater core then my 70 W100 without air. Had rad. shop build mine, could not find replacement core for factory air, find non air all day long. Not to bad to remove, but I had entire system out so I could rebuild and clean.

It's not hard. Most of the fasteners are on the firewall and are easily accessed. I think there are eight or nine. Remove the glove box guts and you'll have great access to the cables and such. You don't need an FSM to remove it. If you have any mechanical aptitude at all, you'll see how easy it is. I was removing the entire unit, so I wasn't concerned if there were any Freon in it or not.

The heater core is out and dissembled. It took less than 2 hours to remove and 30 minutes to take apart. This is a 1970 with factory AC and it is a has 383. Here is the core. It has stamped part number (picture attached) and inked number but, it is unreadable. Unless someone can prove otherwise, the AC vs non-AC core is not the same. My buddy that has about 12 of these trucks and he says its not the same. Any suggestions? Craig
