Carb overhaul- UPDATE: I think the stromberg is smoked
Carb overhaul- UPDATE: I think the stromberg is smoked
Title pretty much says it all, I'm going to do a gasket and seal replacement on my Stromberg WW 2bbl carb. I'm doing this because the thing was puking fuel from the upper and lower seals (not the seals where the carb mounts to the engine, replaced those earlier). I've got a kit courtesy of Mike's carburetor parts, and the instructions that came with it are pretty good. The carb itself looks pretty simple, it's definitely not as bad as a distributor pump (screw those things). Still, it's my first carb overhaul and I was wondering if you guys have little tips or tricks you've learned through past experience that could save me a potential headache. FWIW, I'm not going to be getting to this for a few days, I'm still chasing gremlins out of the ignition circuit.
Here are a few pics for reference, thanks!:
EDIT* It'd help if I actually uploaded the pix...

Re: Carb overhaul- any tips and tricks?
#1 tip: DO NOT lose, or launch, the check balls or any tiny springs!

Little tiny parts under spring pressure, duly noted. Thanks! I was looking at the exploded diagram, and I can already see a couple of potential escapees.PwrWgnDrvr wrote:#1 tip: DO NOT lose, or launch, the check balls or any tiny springs!

Good point!! But... Why is it you can always find them on the floor if you don't need them?PwrWgnDrvr wrote:#1 tip: DO NOT lose, or launch, the check balls or any tiny springs!

Re: Carb overhaul- any tips and tricks?
I had that same carb on my 318 i could never get it to run right finally pulled the intake manifold the cross over heat port was plugged after that i would run great
Re: Carb overhaul- any tips and tricks?
Huh, that's good to know. When I took my engine down to the block I made a point of blowing down all the intake manifold ports, hopefully that took care of any potential problems on that end. Took the carb apart today, I'm letting it soak in solvents over night. Actually, I'm having a new problem. I stupidly removed the vacuum advance from the distributor to get to an intake manifold bolt, in doing so I screwed up the points
. Live and learn, I guess. I think I've got it timed right, I'll see tomorrow after I'm done with the carb.
EDIT: Didn't lose anything while taking the carb apart
. At least I did something right.

Re: Carb overhaul- any tips and tricks?
Don't assume that your carb is the original one on the truck. Mine sure wasn't and I got the wrong rebuild kit. Get a small table and drape a white towel over the top of it. Make index card notes and place them next to every part grouping. The towel is so things don't go rolling away. Rebuild diagrams tenting. Rebuild directions tend to be very general and assume a bunch of skipped steps. Don't assume the person who had the car before you didn't try to rebuild it and got it wrong. It could be set up wrong now. Even a pro carb shop doesn't bench test, and it could still be screwed up. Good luck!!!
Re: Carb overhaul- any tips and tricks?
Just got finished with my carb rebuild/getting that #$@**& points distributor dialed in!! I've got the fuel and timing in the ballpark, and she's running pretty damn good! Anyway I've got a bunch of pics, but I want to go drive. I'll start a thread in the build board later, I'm gonna go enjoy my swepty.
Thanks for the help, btw!

Re: Carb overhaul- UPDATE: I think the stromberg is smoked
So, the carburetor itself wasn't particularly hard to overhaul. It kinda runs, but I found a problem that I don't see an effective way of fixing. Check the pic out, I found another leak around the throttle valves behind the linkage. I'm fairly sure there's a bushing back in there, but since the linkage is brazed on I really don't want to mess with it.
I went to the Holley website, they recommended this carb: http://www.holley.com/0-7448. Anyone have experience with this particular model?

Re: Carb overhaul- UPDATE: I think the stromberg is smoked
I actually found a local guy that has experience with strombergs. He quoted me $90 to replace the throttle linkage bushing and flow test it. I'm gonna give that a swing, as this shop seems pretty legit. I'll keep you guys posted though.
