FUEL TANK QUESTIONS

What are you guys doing when you're trying to get extra fuel tank volume? I can't find the threads i have seen in the past that show examples of guys putting LARGE tanks under the bed etc. I want to get my 66 D200 Crew ready to be a reliable camping truck, going to need a lot more volume than that 17 gal tank behind the seat. Would appreciate hearing what you've done, what you've seen, and/or directing me to any threads within this site...Thanks!

I have a 37 gallon tank under the rear of the bed where the original spare went. I had a relative that was one of those guys who could fabricate just about anything and had him build it years ago.

I just installed a suburban tank. It is by no means a bolt in, though. I haven't finished all the details, but I removed the shackle crossmember and slid it back and flipped it. I build a perimeter frame so I can install a larger suburban tank later, if I choose. They came in 3 sizes, IIRC. Best of all, even brand new they are cheap.

Crusty, I'd love to see some pix when you get a chance... I see they are $90-100 new. I'm looking for something that fits in the spare tire slot and the measurements I found online appear perfect.

Here's some pictures. The front and rear cross pieces are 1" angle and the sides are 1" box tube. This is mainly because that is what I had laying around. The front and rear mounts are 2" strap and angle, respectively.
Here you can see how low it hangs in reference to the spring hanger

In this picture, the 2x4 above the tank is the height of the bed floor, so you can see about how high up in the frame I set the tank.

Rear angle iron and flipped crossmember. Bolts are Stainless Steel.

Front Strap mount. There was a divot in the crossmember that I just drilled out.

Oh, a bunch  Not sure about the genius part, though. I mostly rip off stuff from other people's internet postings. I do a lot of google/yahoo searching...

I really like those last two options. I would like to try to find a tank that has the filler tube directly out the back, and try to fill directly behind the license plate (that swivels down). If anyone finds a tank with that configuration, let me know.

Just plumbed my tank today. It's a '74 New Yorker tank, 26 gallons, with the filler just off center in the rear and the sender/outlet on the right side. I built my frame from 3/4 x 1 1/2 x 1/8 wall tubing and used the factory straps to hold it up. The front of the frame bolts to the cross-member between the upper shock mounts and the rear just bolts inside the frame. I installed everything without taking the bed off, so I might have been able to get it an inch or so higher, but it looks good so far. Clearance on my duals is close, but I won't be able to judge too well until I get the engine back in...

I would love to see any pictures of this (new Yorkers option) if you have any.

If you like to keep a spare tire out of the way, a later model Dodge tank is a good option. See here: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=23402#p168107

I really wanted to go the route of the later model dodge tanks like you did. I followed your thread on swapping the tanks out and even found a cheap tank that was being parted out just a few weeks ago. BUT, i have a crew cab, and I dont have enough room for the length of tank. I had an available tank (67"x13"x13") from a 84 or 85 i think. i got under the truck and found that the tank was easily too long. if there are other late model tanks that are shorter, I will JUMP at the chance to go with one of those tanks to be able to leave the spare tire alone.
