Time to replace my exhaust. Is the exhaust pipe before and after the muffler 2 1/4" diameter. Inlet/Outlet on the muffler 2 1/4"? I need to replace from the exhaust manifold all the way back. My exhaust pipe was cut off in front of the rear wheel. Can anyone take a photo of the stock exhaust system on a 70 W200 or 69-71? I especially need to see the route the pipe takes from the muffler back over the rear axle.

I'll start with the Routing Part.
Every Muffler Shop has a picture book on what the routing was/is.

Exhaust Pipe Diameter
In the beginning the Engineering Department Team figures out what
the best diameter should be. Later in the process the "Bean Counters"
say to the Engineers, "... We can get a smaller diameter for a lower price,
what can we do about the size of this pipe?" . The Engineering Dept
replies by saying if we do use the small diameter it will cut _______
power from the engine. The smaller pipe is used to cut building cost.
The build order is to have the smaller pipe and to "Flare the End" to
match the Exhaust Manifold Size.

For any Performance Reasons the build order is to have the orignal
diameter. This means for you to have the same diameter from the
Exhaust Manifold to the In-let of the Muffler. The Out-let from the
muffler ( aka Tail Pipe ) should be a smaller diameter than what went
into the muffler.

The reason for the smaller diameter is that at this point in travel the
Exhaust Molucules have cooled off ( shurnk ) and the same diameter
is no longer needed or required.

Your Replacement Cost
We all grew up in an era that when we saw a vehicle with Dual Exhaust
we knew that vehicle was not a "Ho-Hum" version. This has implanted
a visual dent in our thoughts. They now have a Dual In-let Muffler which
permits the power to be the same as a vehicle with dual exhaust. This is
one muffler at one purchacing price and one Tail Pipe.

Or you can opt for the older manner and have double the price for the same
HP and MPG reason's.

If you have the 318 the correct NAPA Muffler is #22-599.
For the 383 or even the 440's the correct NAPA Muffler is #21-400.

Got her back from the muffler shop....wow what a great sounding truck. For one thing the heat riser was stuck closed.. I decided to go with the 2 1/4 inch system. They installed an H pipe and two chrome tips. I chose the Flowmasters to be included in the system. The tips came out in front of the rear wheels. Very good sound at all levels. Power is way up. I would say almost 25% or since it sounds better I just floor it more....It seems to have a real hot rod sound now To foggy to take a photo but I did attach one from last spring.

That may well be true, but when was the last time you saw anybody refer to it? They will just walk under your truck, and say, "How about we run it here..." John, you're doing the right thing in figuring out exactly how/were you want it before you take it to a shop. Unfortunately I don't have anything close enough to original to be of any help to you.

Thanks for the replys.....I went to my local shop{small town} and asked about the book with pictures of stock exhaust systems...."we dont have that there book" My choice at this point is to have the exhaust run in the most "likely route" or wait for some pictures from a member. I will inquire from the next town down the coast to see if the routing book is available.

It is not a photo of "pictures" it is much as the Electric Diagram for the
wiring. It will state the OEM pipe diameter and the muffler information
for all design's and version's.

Your Truck only had the Exhaust Routed on the right side ( passenger side ).

The "y" Pipe goes to the Right with the Muffler under the Cab.

From the last CSS/HPP's there has not been a Under the Vehicle to the Rear
Bumper Dual Exhaust Dodge Truck. But ... the Exhaust Designed Routing
Designrd Space is still there.

I had mine custom made at Cole Muffler. (Waterloo, NY). It has the 225 slant six. They "Y"'d it off the muffler and matched the routing of both sides after the muffler so they matched. If you look under the rear fender on either side the routing matches perfectly and neat in all regards. The system sounds great although I didn't use Flowmaster type muffler, I wanted it quieter, used stock muffler. The whole installation included the clamps, hangers (all new front to back), and the bill was $238. I am well pleased.

Since that time they have "modern-ised" it.

Thanks to all for your input and suggestions. I've been busy lately and havent had time to get to this project but I will post some pictures once I get it done.

Gerry, do you have a photo of your exhaust set-up from below?

Sorry, I do not have a p0hoto of the exhaust system. I would be glad to take one for you, however my truck is covered in my storage garge for the winter (upstate NY!). I could take one next time the truck is on a lift and I will do it then. Sorry for the wait.However here is a better photo of the exhaust tips and how we have them coming out just below the step bumper....

Here's a random picture of the exhaust on my old '65 W100. I had new exhaust run all the way back from the manifolds.
Don't know it this will help. They guy at the local shop will more than likely know how to run the exhaust. It is a four wheel drive so you'll need some clearance.

I believe the stock size is 2-1/4" which is in the picture. I've used 2-1/2" on my 340 and built 318. Allows for a little more flow.

Hmmm, now I'm wondering if my dual exhaust that dumps in front of the rear wheels is stock. I am meeting with the original owner this weekend over beers, so I'll know a lot more then. Does the hanger look stock?

The only Sweptline that has the Exhaust dumping before the rear wheels is the
0ne ton and larger trucks.

The Rear of the Tail Pipe also should not extend past the Rear Bumper.

Look at the Dealer's Sales Brochure's and see what they have. This and the
Parts Book is your true guide.

Sorry to steal this post! But Gerry's truck peaked my curiosity!

Gerry, very very nice truck! What caught my attention was the two
pictures of the rear of the truck, as I understand your truck is all original so
what is so curious to me is the lack of reverse lights? I don't know what year
your truck is (I'm guessing pre-67) so can anyone tell me when the reverse lights
became standard on our trucks?
