As if my gas mileage wasn't going to be bad enough...

... I found I have a fuel tank leak.

Filled it up for the first time last night, got in this morning and it WREAKED of gas. Slid the seat forward and saw the carpet damp with fuel. Apparently not a big leak as I still had a full tank of gas on the gauge.

Any typical areas that leak on these? the filler neck and Sending unit hole look good and dry. Only wet area i see is lower down on the tank, but this issue didn't crop up until I filled up.

Also, Anyone ever move the tank to the bed? or another location? I has thoughts of moving it the front of the bed and boxing it in with some sheet metal. not too keen on having the tank in the cab and wouldn't mind the extra storage behind the seat.

Thoughts, suggestion?

Brent

Getting rid of the in cab tank is a popular modification & has been discussed here in the past, somewhere.

Finding a tank to fit underside is the trick.

I woke up to the same interesting problem a while back. It turned out to be a very simple fix. The clamps on the fuel line at the top of the tank had come loose and fuel was leaking behind the tank. 2" of new line and 2 new clamps.....problem solved. might be worth looking at.

Planned on pulling the seat out this weekend and checking it out. Filler house will be first thing to inspect. Thanks for the link to the other thread. I often forget to search first. :study

Pulled the seat and Tank out and found that someone had the tank out before at some point and managed to dent and split a hairline crack in the backside of the tank. Patched it up, ripped the fuel soaked Astro turf carpeting out. Cleaned everything up. Put in new Filler hose and soft fuel line and it smelled all nice and old truck pretty this morning when I got in.

late 70's early 80's ram chargers make nice tank donors. they fit between our frame rails out back real nice, and if your lucky to score one of the poly tanks its like 30-35 gallons.
