There was a larger tank, my 71 parts truck has one. when the larger tank is installed, the jack is moved under the hood on top the right inner apron, i dont know the capacity of it though. I think it might be part of the adventurer package.

Gas Tank

Post by MountainMoparRobin »

OK guys,
I thought it was in 1969 that Dodge made the switch from the 18 gal to the 25 gallon. I know that in 1970 the trucks all came with the 25 gallon capacity. The 1968 trucks had the small tanks and I thought that 1969 trucks had the large tanks. My truck also came with the saddle bag tanks that held an additional 19.5 gallons each and its just a D100. The owner had bought it with a /6 and he said he enjoyed going for long rides! could you imagine 25 gallons behind the seat, then 19 galllons on the driver side and 19 gallons on the passenger side? I almost think with that setup you could drive across US!

Robin, even if you still had all those tanks and they were full, you would still have to fill up all the way at least twice to get to Colorado. Took me 20 gallons to get the 71 up to Fort Worth, but then I can only seem to coax about 12.5 mpg out of her... (I suspect quite a bit of drag at 75 mph) Someone out there told me that the LA318's should be getting 15-18 mpg... who was that, and how????
Thanks, Clint

tanks

Post by MountainMoparRobin »

red no their isn't enough room, they made the space smaller on the 68's, I say that for I did see a 68 383 with the smaller tank.
Oneowner71, you should infact be getting better than that for before I beefedup the 440 I got 11 mpg on the highway and could probably get at around of 10 maybe now?

Mileage

Post by MountainMoparRobin »

Cowboy,
Clint carb is messed up, somewhat similiar to my 83, I only have a 318, with a two barrel and in town very seldom do I get even 10 mpg. While in Texas I was never able to floor it for the carb would flood and pop out excess gas! I advanced the timing only to have the ping! once I crossed New Mexico into Colorado my mileage on the highway went from 12-17 mpg. since I've been here I've cleaned the carb in the cold winter and advanced the timing and now I can floor it and she'll flat move! yesterday because of a miss at a stop light I replaced the fuel filter and the pvc valve and it seems to have eleminated the miss! Now if I could get 35 mpg out of it I would be in bussiness!

I certainly wouldn't say I baby it. I'm not sure what the deal is though... I have new carb, plugs, wires, rotor, points.. pretty much anything not internal to the motor has been replaced recently. On my list of projects it the elect ignition and the switch to a 4bbl edelbrock setup.. but I got to get a few paychecks behind me first. The thing with the carb is, I still have all the soot in the tailpipe, though that may just be residual, but I still have run-on issues, regardless of what I run through it or blow out of it. On top of that, the idle mixture on the carb is just rich enough so that it would stall out at stop lights anymore... not even 1.5 turns out. To add to that, I have the smoke at startup which suggests valve seals or worse, and have been running unleaded fuel in it for at least 10 years with the softer seats... guess I have a lot of work left to do. Almost makes me want to just drop it for the Dude, but that one is even worse. Oh well, these are the things that make it interesting, right
Thanks, Clint
