Slant six redline?

Post by 2bluesweptlines »

What's the redline for a '64 stock 225 /6? Also, what's the highest rpms I can cruise at for extended periods (hours)?

2blue you can bore it 30 over balence it & put a super six two bbl carb set up on it & there a lot of street power there or there's two web sites , /6 .com , & clifords for the high power- high dollar set up's , those are not the right link's , but someone will post them

Hola Name-Less

I too would look at the Super Six 2 bbl ( ... http://www.slantsix.org/articles/supersix/article.htm ) and matching exhaust manifold. The Super Six exhaust manifold opening is the same 2.25 inch diam as the V8.

The 1972 - 1987 factory anything cam is not a solid lifter ( aka tune up all the time ) unit and has better running spec's. If you go for the better spec'd cam, you will also need the matching 1972 - 1987 numbered head.

This is an brain-less power up grade and it still lugs as a six should.

1981 is frist year of hydro lifters in the slant,
any engine before that will be solid lifters and
matched cam.
72 is frist year of hardend valves.
Any head will swap with only miner mods
60 to 80.
75 to 80 head is a "closed" system head
and will use smaller spark pugs because
od casting changes.

The super6 intake and carb were the best upgrade
done on the slant in later years.

If I were to build one, (at one time that was in my truck and had to make the decision) I would go all out, like you said 4 barrell and all, I mean build it until it bust :Thumbsup

Been planning on this myself (for about 25 years) Clifford headers, got an Offy 4bbl intake, problem with 4bbl is: 1. small enough carb to not over carburete. 390 cfm cost more than 750 cfm, go figure. 2. valve size, go to the OS valve mod, very expensive. 3. cam it up, remember, anything over .500 lift, pistons probably need to be notched. 4.streetable? Best all around usable mod will probably be the SuperSix intake, 2bbl, headers, electronic ign. Basicly what I am running on mine. Can't really judge right now, engine needs o'haul, last o'haul was 17 years ago. Look on Ebay for intake, last time I looked was a couple of weeks ago and there was 2 or 3 for sale cheap.

Any and all of the best info and mods out there for the slant 6 are at that http://www.slant6.org if you look around. I think overall the best investment is EFI and a hedder. I know that if I still had my Dart, those two things would be high on my list. :Thumbsup

If anybody deals with Clifford Performance call and make sure they have the part in stock before you pay them for it. After the old man died the customer service went to hell in a handbasket. There is some pretty cool repro parts out for the six including the hyper pac intake. Mill the head .090 to get the compression up and don't be afraid to use the solid lift cam, they only need adjusting once a decade or so. The possiblities are endless :Thumbsup . Oh the question was "what is the redline?' Well it's 1 rpm before it blows
