1966 Sweptline AM Radio

The antennae mast was missing from my 66 D100. I replaced it, temporarily hooked up an external speaker and turned on the original AM Bendix radio. The light came on and it made some static, and for a minute, it sounded as if it was trying to work (faint voices, etc.). Then just as I thought it was about to play, it went silent. When I turn it on now, the light still comes on and I can here a soft thump through the speaker, but no sound after that. What is the culprit, and who works on these things any more? I really would like to keep this truck original. Or who on here may have one that still works for sale?

Probably the 50+ year old capacitors/transistors in it. You could check some local electronic shops as
a repair source.

There are a lot of places that will rebuild and convert to FM

Just checked with the local Radio Shack. They don't work on them nor know of anyone that does. Would really like to get this thing repaired as an original AM radio. I'll check on the Internet to see what's out there. I just hate to send it off due to loss and/or damage. Anyone with a working original for sale, let me know how much you want shipped to Terrell, TX 75160.

Just as a caution, I'll say that if you do locate an un-restored original AM radio, it'll
likely need some attention soon as well. Old transistors, capacitors, etc. have a
tendency to go out of tolerance.

If you have any local car clubs, you might
want to check with members to locate a person who restores them.

Thanks Hobcobble. I am still trying to find someone local to repair this one. Other than the plastic mounting spacers being cracked on the front, the radio appears to be in pretty decent shape. I would like to replace the spacers. They appear to have shrunk over the years.

Find a Ham Radio old-timer. They're the ones that actually know *#%^ about radio.
My buddies and I in the 70's fixed or modified auto radios constantly.

Kim, does your radio face follow the angle of the dash (as in pointing slightly downward)?

I will have to look closely at it. The radio in my truck was from a 68 Auto(filled hole in) shifter dash and used the dash my truck.

Radio Shack has been "Cellphone Shack" for years. They have not hired electronic techs in 20+ years. But they'll sell you an RC car or a cell plan, easily.

I have a 68 and it has the spacers on it too.

Yeah, Radio Shack should remove the "Radio" portion of their name. I have a man checking it out. If nothing turns up, I will most likely re-install it and add an aftermarket on under the dash. I just like the original stuff when I can have it.

I have a close friend of mine here in Colorado that rebuilds old radios of all types he just did the one in my '54 dodge a couple years ago and it works great and soon to do the one for my '62 plymouth he does good work and has access to all the materials his family owned one of the oldest electronic stores here in Denver they went out of business a couple years ago but he still has access to all the old inventory if you want I can forward his contact info to you let me know

The man that owns the Radio Shack here in Terrell has taken my radio to see if he can fix it. His dad owned the business before him and he grew up working on older radios. After we started talking about it, he got his interest piqued, so now he wants to fix it. I should hear something back today and I will let everyone know. This could be another avenue to get these things worked on. Dave, yes please send the contact info of your friend.

Just talked to the man at Radio Shack. He has fixed my radio. He is going to tweak it a little bit more and have it ready tomorrow. (Possibly one weak transistor.) Once I get it installed, I will let everyone know how its working and what he done to fix it.
