AAJ Brakes disk brake conversion done

Post by Angry68d100 »

Hi All I have completed the Disk Brake conversion on my 71 Uteline and it is sooooo good

The truck drives amazing ever since and I am extremely happy
The kit is pretty easy to install now that I have nutted it all out

Following are instructions and pictures

You can get the disk brake conversion kit from Roger at AAJ 503 8901469
He is a really nice guy and was very helpful

First step take off all the drum brakes including the backing plates

Remove the two bottom bolts in the spindle. The spindle has a one eighth lip that sticks out, you need to grind that flush with the spindle
Then the kit comes with some countersunk replacement bolts for the factory ones, counter sink accordingly and replace the bolts
Bolt on the supplied bracket as per the image. Mine needed to have 2 of the supplied spacers on each bolt to line up correctly

Now seperate the brake drum from the hub by removing the wheel studs, you are now ready to start the install. I put new wheel bearings in as a matter of course

This is the parts list required

Kit #326 12" Parts list

Rotors:
74-81 Dodge 1/2 ton PU 4wd (front) 12" (These are actually 11 and three quarters)
OReilly Part numbers 7036RGS

Calipers,Pads & Banjo Bolts:
71-76 Impala

Flex hose:
76 Monte Carlo
Doorman 610-287 Wheel Studs
Doorman 711-241 Lug nuts, I used sweet chrome ones

Knock the new wheel studs into the rotors as the rotor goes behind the hub in assembly (check the image shown

Looks nice. Glad to see one done with all Dodge parts for all those who couldn't handle putting a Crown Vic rotor on a Dodge. Safety was more important to me.

The rotor info is incorrect. 74-79 used the 5 on 4.5 inch bolt pattern. 80-81 used a 5 on 5.5 inch pattern.

Actually, Soop, the change occured in the 1985 model year. I bought a new 1985 Ram 150 Royal SE in March 1985, and it had the larger bolt pattern. There were several new 1984 D150 trucks still on the lot, and all had the smaller 4-1/2" bolt pattern. I've owned a couple of '81 and '82 150 trucks, and they had the smaller pattern, too. Guaranteed.

It says 4 wheel drive rotor. I stand by my statement.

Were the full time half ton rotors the 5 on 4.5 (small hole) and locking hub rotors the 5 on 5.5?

That's fine, but that doesn't change facts. I know what I've owned over the years and my statement is fact. I'm not gonna argue it.

I don't know about 4X4, but I've got an '83 pickup in the barn with smaller bolt pattern and an '86 Ram Charger with the larger bolt pattern. Both are RWD.

You seem to be talking about a 2 wheel drive truck which was different.

All of these sites/threads agree with what I stated.

that's really interesting that the new rotor goes behind the hub. i like that setup compared to the aspen rotors i am using on my AAJ kit that i installed several years ago.

Image

to install the aspen rotors requires the use of shims between the spindle and inner bearing.

i am getting ready to install a rear disc kit from Scarebird. money has been tight for stuff like that.

So if we are talking 4x4 the small bolt pattern only happens on the full time spicer 44 f set up. Any hand locking set up of what ever year is going to have the big center hole and be the big bolt pattern. ?

There was a conversion that added lockouts to the full time axle.

The part number for the rotor listed above does appear to have the correct 5 on 4.5 inch bolt pattern, so Oreilly Auto should have the rotor needed for this brake swap.

The disc brake swap sounds nice. Did you also swap to a different master cylinder? Especially the early single cylinders.

You'll have to change that single pot to a later dual master cylinder with disc brakes. Adding a proportioning valve along with, will help dial things in real nice, but it is not a requirement.
