Tonneau cover

Post by rickdavid »

I have a hard 2 piece tonneau cover on my '69 8 foot box. It was a 1 piece when I got the truck but I couldn't reach up behind the cab. It is made of steel frame and plywood and hinged in 2 spots. Esay to slip a case of beer or cooler, tool box etc. in the back without lifting the whole lid. If anyone is interested in details let me know.

What kind of hinge is used between the 2 pieces of plywood? Does it seal well enough to keep out dirt and water. I plan on making one similar to this but with 3 sections and without the material.

I see now that you don't have a hinge between the 2 sections. They are not connected at that point.

There is a piano hinge on the front of the box for the first section. The whole thing is mounted by a steel frame that is bolted to the floor at the front with 4 removable pins so the whole thing can be removed. The second piano hinge is attached to the metal frame.
I will attach a couple more shots.

The area between the two pieces has a wide rubber strip under the hinge, it leaked a bit when I got the truck. I have added a foam self adhesive strip along the top of the box sides. You could use the foam kit you can buy for puttting on truck caps or try foam door draft stop insulation from local hardware store.
