Door Locks D200....... driving me nuts!!!

Post by JesseD200CSS »

My 66' D200 has a loose door lock cylinder. I took it out, and tried to get it seated properly, but never have seen what it is supposed to look like, I can't get it to work. :banghead Here is a picture of the inside of the exterior door panel. That little plate that was tack welded on..... is that proper, or jimmy rigged? Then a picture of the other two parts I am trying to make it work with. Any help would be appreciated!!! :usa

I picked up a U shaped clip that is supposedly made to clip in the cylinder, but it looks a little big....and it wont work with that tacked on plate!! :thinking

looks like maybe you need a die grinder... or a welder.

"Technically" that plate holds the retainer and it looks as if someone pried it open with a screwdriver to remove the retainer. They are not supposed to be removed from the door. The retainer should still work even though it has been removed. I am just going to guess that the tangs of the retainer are not 'bent' enough to actually hold the lock in place. So... the one set of tangs is supposed to keep pressure against the lock and that would hold it tight to the door. Be careful not to break any off. It looks like the outer tang is broke off, but that is the one that holds it on the door. When you remove the lock, you are only supposed to 'slide' the retainer over to one side, and that would allow the lock to be removed from the door. However even though the retainer has been removed, you still should be able to use it to hold the lock in place. While the lock and retainer are out of the door, I would suggest make sure the retainer goes over the lock fine and also would/could slide back and forth. Then, carefully bend the tangs to help tighten the retainer against the door which would in turn hold the lock in place tighter.

Hope that helps somewhat.

Jim

Thanks for the input, I'll keep at it. Just didn't want to keep trying something that wasn't going to work in the first place. :usa

Looking at your picture again, I noticed "now" that the bottom tang is broken off. That tang would be one of the two tangs that hold it into the metal that keeps it held on the door, plus this also gives it the tension it needs to hold the lock tightly. However, I believe that now that retainer may not hold your lock in place tightly as with that tang broken off, it won't have any thing to keep it bowed out. You may be able to put a slight arc to the whole thing which would put a pressure on it... Maybe put a post here that you could ask for a section of the door where the lock goes from a JUNK door. That way, you could get a new retainer not broken. Then you would be able to just slide it over the lock and be done with it.

My retainer was broke too... and I got another retainer from a junk door.

Good luck with it!

Jim
