Should I fill the frame voids with foam?

Post by soopernaut »

I've been doing some sanding and cleaning of my frame and noticed there are some areas that are going to be hard to get at. These areas are where some of the crossmembers meet the side rails of the frame. They kind of form a pocket that is difficult to clean and paint so I thought maybe filling them with expanding foam would be a good idea. I figured I would put a rubber hose through the void to run wires, etc through and spray around it with foam. Is there any reason that this would be a bad idea?

Bad Idea. Filling the corners with foam wil eventually trap moisture and cause far more rust than if you left them open. Scrape out what dirt and rust you can and hit the areas with a good rust inhibitor like POR-15 or such.

I know the locations you mean.....
I blasted my frame to clean those hard to reach areas. Then i got about a bunch of small little cheap foam disposable bushes at the hardware store and loaded a brush with POR15. The I grabed the very end of the bush handle with my fingers and drove it though those pockets and gooped it all over until all the surfaces in those areas were covered.

I'm right there with you. There were some areas I couldn't get real well with those items.
