8 lug steelies
Do they exist? i know thw Ford vans came w/some 8 lug steelies that i think should fit but not to sure. I've also been looking for a set and having no luck. What came stock on the 68 camper special? I'm trying to go for the hot rod chevy look w/large white walls but lake of cheap wheels is killing me.

Re: 8 lug steelies
3/4 ton and 1 ton Dodges came with 8 lugs. They will fit Swepts up till
about 95 (when the body changed). I have a set of 16" 8 lug steel wheels
on my crew cab. They came off an 85 3/4 ton. They are tricky to find,
but they are out there. In most cases you will find it is almost cheaper
to buy new steel wheels. I came real close to getting these, until I found
a set of Dodge ones. They are available in 16"x7" with 8 on 6.5" lugs
and a 4" backspace. I still need a spare though.

Re: 8 lug steelies
I collect junk like that, and there are a bunch of difference you need to be aware of. First, dodge and ford wheels will interchange, but chevy has a smaller center hole. From there, both dodge and ford made different wheels in both 16" and 16.5" and some have different backspacing. Probably the best would be late 80s-early 90s from either one of them. They have markings on the wheel between lug holes, so you can match wheels by verifying the markings. Also, some ford are riveted centers and others are welded.
Look on craigslist. The other day there was a stock ford set for (I think) $60 with tires. Another place is junkyards, but they want as much as the cragars posted.

Re: 8 lug steelies
My 62 has a set of 8 lug steelies. I thought they were Dodge wheels, but I recently found little "Ford" stamps on them. They fit well and look nice. Oh, ya, they are of the 16" variety.

Re: 8 lug steelies
I've got rims & some 30's on my truck now but i'm trying to go for more of a hot rod look. I checked craigslist but nothing in my area. I also checked E-bay but i'm not spending $400 on steelies than another $150 for shipping. I also tried junk yards but those are slim to none around here as well. The search continues...

Re: 8 lug steelies
It took me 6 months to get all 4 from the time I started looking.
Found 2 on craigslist locally with 2 new mud and snows for $100.
Then found 2 more in a 4x4 salvage an hour away, they only had 2!
As it happens both pair came off 85's. The 2nd 2 cost $45 each
an then another $250 for the remaining 2 matching tires.
That was a year ago, and I haven't found the spare yet.

Don't limit yourself. I scour yard sales, the American Classifieds, craigslist, ebay, the newspaper, and also just drive around. Sometimes, people don't even know they want to sell something
You just ask if they want to get rid of it.

What a mess.

Re: 8 lug steelies
They are out there. I would try to stay away from the chevy ones. I had them on my old truck and had to run spacers on the front because they were hitting my tie rods. I have 16" dodge wheels on my truck now. Just don't go to big of a tire or they will rub too. I have 265-75-16 on this truck and they rub pretty bad. I'm think 235-75-16 would be perfect

Re: 8 lug steelies
I believe the stock wheel was 16 x 5.5. The '68 wheel was available in standard or
split ring. The stock wheel for '61-'68 had a hubcap that snapped INSIDE the hub
ridge, as opposed to the '69 & later wheels, where the hubcaps snapped OVER the
hub ridge. The non split ring 16" stock wheels are getting tough to find. There
were also 17.5" & 19.5" versions of this wheel.... both are very tough to come by.
One of the stock tire sizes commonly used is the 7.50x16.

235/85-16 fits and looks great on these trucks!!
They are pretty common and affordable for a 32" tall tire.

Which translates to a 31" tire, if you don't want to mess with recalibrating your spedo. FYIHobcobble wrote:One of the stock tire sizes commonly used is the 7.50x16.

Dealing with the speedo after a tire or gear change is a 15 minute, $20 project.

Re: 8 lug steelies
I got 5 wheels from Stocktons wheel service. The size is 16x7 with a backspacing of 4.5". The wheels were custom made and the cost of one was $ 125.- plus s&h. I'm running it on my truck with BF Goodrich All Terrain 235/85R16. The speedometer is very accurate (runs within -1% from the displayed speed with the 4.88 axles). I know custom made rims are rather expensive, but for me it's not possible to travel from junk yard to junk yard.
By the way: the tires don't rub at any part of the body or the frame. A pic of my truck with theese rim/tire combo is in the 2006 calendar. Or - if ya pm me, I'll send a pic.
