Replacing side trim with pinstripe?

When I bought my truck ('71 Adventurer Sport) it had been repainted, and since they didn't like the looks of the side trim, they ground off all of the rivets for the trim clips. I put the trim back on with 3M trim tape, and it's held good for 2 years, but I'm not happy with the way it looks, and I'm always worried about losing a piece of trim on the road. I'm planning on doing the Long Haul on the Hot Rod Power Tour next summer, and I need something better.
I've thought of pulling the trim off and replacing it with "look-alike" pinstriping: wide black in the center, with maybe 2 different colors of silver surrounding it, the same widths as the factory trim.
Has anyone done like this? Any opinions or suggestions? Any other ideas about holding on the factory trim?
